We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emma Rowley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emma below.
Emma, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The EP I’m currently getting ready to release has been the most personally meaningful project I’ve worked on. Through the height of the pandemic, I found myself pouring my creative energy into writing songs about growing pains and self-discovery. Reflecting on these pivotal experiences during such a tumultuous time was very cathartic. I’m excited to finally share the title of the EP here as well! The project is called “Orange”, which is a color that holds special spiritual meaning to me. And since my favorite/lucky number is seven, I had to extend this EP to include seven songs because it truly called for that kind of complete symbolism. The entirety of the project feels magical with all of these deeply personal elements working together to create something I am so proud of.

Emma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My career began at just 12 years old in New York City where I was cast in two Broadway productions (Lupone Gypsy, 2008 & Bye Bye Birdie, 2009). After performances on national television and on the iconic stage at Carnegie Hall, I knew I was destined to continue pursuing a career behind a microphone. I paved the way toward my dream of being an artist by moving to Nashville, TN, and attending Belmont University. At Belmont, I honed my songwriting craft and shaped my voice as I grew from a girl into a woman, which further solidified the groundwork that would become the base for my career as a recording artist. This year, I’m presenting a shift in my musical expression. A blend between rock and pop, the music to come will showcase lyrical density that I hope will help bring listeners a sense of communal understanding. Though the experiences I wrote about are personal, they are universally withstood.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The internet is one of the most powerful tools to ever exist. It has allowed us to communicate and collaborate with people that just a few decades ago we likely would not have had the opportunity to cross paths with. Getting to connect with people from all around the world has been one of the most incredible aspects of being an artist. And for as frustrating as social media can be, I’m also grateful for the ability it has given me to reach listeners across the globe who can relate to the things I write about. Music as a whole is an intricately woven tapestry. It holds many meanings to many different people. It can act as a universal language, healing balm, diary entry, or even as the key to unlocking a special memory. Getting to be a part of creating that tapestry is beyond rewarding.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
From teenage heartbreak to navigating depression as an adult, music has brought me peace more times than I could count. My favorite songs have carried me through the lowest of lows and reminded me of how far I’ve come when I’m sailing through life’s highest highs. My aim is to write music that can be a friend to others, just as so many artists and their creations have done for me.
