We were lucky to catch up with Wellington Carvalho recently and have shared our conversation below.
Wellington, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started photography as a hobby and still to this day I treat it as a hobby. I’ve always loved watching videos and tutorials on YouTube and that’s how I learned (and still do) most things.
I wouldn’t change anything to speed up my learning process, because I feel like the way I learned most things was already in a fast paced way.
The skills that were and still are most essentials is my editing process (post production) and the way I see things when I’m shooting an image.
My biggest obstacle is actually time, since photography is my hobby and not my source of income, I don’t have a whole lot of time to dedicate to my craft as I wish I did.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Wellington Carvalho, but everyone calls me Well. I was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil but have called Atlanta home for the past few years.
Photography came into my life at a time where I needed to express my creativity somehow. Back in Brazil, I could easily do that through music, playing drums but couldn’t do that here.
I’ve always loved photography! I would take photos on my phone and play around with editing but never took that seriously until my wife gave me a camera set for Christmas, and the rest is history! I fell in love with street, landscape, and aerial photography, and that’s where I can best express myself as a photographer.
I’m best known for my cityscape drone images, I’ve fell in love with aerial photography because it’s a point of view that most people don’t get to see in their everyday life.
I’m proud of how much I have evolved as an artist and look forward to keep learning from all the other amazing photographers.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Since Instagram is my main way of showcasing my work, the most rewarding thing is when a photo/video I post gets a lot of attention, or people really like it. Having so many talented photographers in Atlanta and on IG and still get notice among this amazing group is very rewarding to me.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
There’s no specific resources, but I wish I had the time to learn how to use Photoshop early on. It’s a magnificent tool that can help in so many ways. If I had learned it early on it would have saved me a lot of time (and headache) on certain jobs.
