Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Matz . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
In the photography world “most” family photographers offer full 1 hour or more sessions along with a limited number of photos your receive after your session.
I believe all family sessions should be mini sessions, because I have learned from experience that children don’t last over 15 minutes and likewise parents don’t want to be there longer than they have to. My biggest point of success is offering these very family friendly sessions at a reasonable cost. My other attribute is that I never put a limit of images delivered back to any family. I believe these are their pictures and I want them to have all of their images. So a typical 25 minute family session will on average yield 40/60 images.
My last main reason I feel I have been successful and what makes me a little different, is that I make these sessions fun for kids. Most of the time they don’t even realize we’re taking pictures. Sometimes we’re dancing or just singing the alphabet but we are most definitely not sitting perfectly and saying “cheese”.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My photography business was the product of COVID stay home orders. I needed an outlet and was also on maternity leave from work so I picked up a camera and that’s where it all started. Several classes and a lot of investment later I’m doing this more than I ever thought I would. I love being a family photographer and watching my clients families grow. I have captured everything from a couples wedding, to their first born child and it’s an absolute honor. My clients know when they arrive to their session they don’t have to worry about anything else. I take care of all the posing/looks/outfit fixing/kids. I’ll even hold the baby so I can get the best shot of the parents. I love more than anything when clients send me pictures of their printed images all over their house. These moments I’m freezing in time for them is truly priceless and I love that I get to give them that gift.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The reason I continue to do photography is it’s truly a passion of mine. My goal at every session is for that family/bride/couple to leave and feel valued. I do like to think I’m also my clients best hype girl. Some clients come reserved and leave feeling like a million bucks and I don’t think it should be any other way. So my goal and daily mission is to make sure my clients leave feeling better than how they arrived. I know from experience before I was a photographer, leaving my family sessions feeling completely stressed out and I would never want that for my clients. I never want my clients to dread coming to a session and they don’t, that’s why they come back several times a year.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Honestly, my clients referrals are the main way I grow I business. My clients tell their friends and family about their experience and they send me new clients. Aside from referrals, I do advise on Facebook or in community groups but the majority of my clients are referred.
