We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jacob Dsouza a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jacob, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
In August of 2022, Chantal Kreviazuk pulled me on stage at Jackson Triggs winery in Niagara on the Lake to perform my original song “Nights in California”. She had seen the song on Facebook a year prior and reached out to let me know that she loved it. When I heard she was playing nearby, my manager Danny Lamb had the idea to reach out to Chantal to see if it’d be possible for me to share the stage with her for this one song. I was amazed when I heard the answer was yes. I can’t help but think of the kindness exhibited by Chantal whenever I tell this story. I am forever grateful for her giving me the greatest moment of my life. Playing on the stage with her was an honour and I will never forget that moment!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The label “musician” is a little bit limiting when describing my passion for music. I am a guitarist, vocalist, drummer, bassist, pianist, songwriter, engineer, and producer. Essentially, I live and breathe music. I was 3 years old when my parents bought Avalon Music Academy in my hometown of Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Ever since then I have been in love with music. I was 4 years old when I began playing the drums. Eventually I started playing guitar and began singing. When I was 10, I had written my first song. Although, certainly not my best song. As my songwriting improved, I began longing for the next step of my journey. That would end up being learning how to record and produce my own songs. Over the pandemic, my boredom got the better of me and I started learning as much as I could about production. Just as my firsts songs were, my first recordings were atrocious. However I kept learning and working and eventually got the hang of it.
Now, I release music entirely from my bedroom. You can find it on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon, and wherever else you stream may music.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, loving what I do is what it’s all about. I will never be as passionate about anything the way I am about music. Doing what I love for money already at age 17 is a dream come true, no matter how far my creative journey goes.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
It’s all about open-mindedness. We live in a world so corrupted by instant gratification. If people aren’t instantly caught onto a musician sharing their work, it’s just background noise. It’s impossible to force everyone to have an instant passion for art, but I think a great way to support artists is to simply pay them a bit more attention and appreciate their work a little bit more.
