We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LaQuanda Doss a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

LaQuanda, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?

If I could start over and do things differently, I would put more money into the startup. I would hire and delegate tasks instead of taking everything on myself. I would have gotten a lot further and sooner. On the flip side I am grateful for everything I learned during the startup of The Mz Q Collection and I am better equipped at training employees on what works and what doesn’t. This saves the company money and time since I’ve already made those mistakes.

LaQuanda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Being a hair and makeup artist ultimately lead to my decision to start The Mz Q Collection. Being in the beauty industry is very satisfying for me. When you look good, you feel good and I enjoy making people look and feel great about themselves. When someone puts on one of our wigs or gets our hair extensions installed, it gives them an extra boost of confidence. Our clients come from many different backgrounds, and feeling beautiful and confident carries over into their careers and daily lives. The Mz Q Collection has become a one stop beauty shop. Our clients are able to get their entire look from our site. Our 100% virgin hair wigs and extensions, mink lashes, Juicy Lipgloss, fashion coats and jewelry complete any look. The beauty industry changes frequently and we’ve created a platform that allows us to pivot with the changes so that we can offer new techniques and diverse beauty options.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

I give credit to being a hair and makeup artist for helping me bring awareness to The Mz Q Collection. When I use our products on my clients they absolutely love the quality. Since all of our wigs and extensions are 100% virgin hair, it can be washed, heat-styled, colored and reused several times. Our hair can last for years with the proper care. This allows our customers to save lots of money. Our mink lashes are also great quality and our clients can get up to 25 wears from one pair. When the service and products are so great people can’t help but to comment and talk about them.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

Consistency is more important than overworking. You can literally get more done with small consistent tasks than extensive sporadic tasks. This method helps you to avoid carelessness, reduces stress levels, and creates productive habits. Creating goals and scheduling daily tasks around them keeps you focused and better equipped to execute those goals. Burnout is real and once you’ve gotten to that point its difficult to pull yourself up to start again. Imagine having to put an event together in one day and you forget to order the programs, a small but crucial part of the event, all because you were stressed out and overlooked this minor detail. It happens and you will get discouraged. Consistent small tasks limit the amount of overlooked details or mistakes.
