Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Al Sauls. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Al , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
During my youth, I lacked the focus that was needed to be successful at anything. Instead of my parents becoming overbearing, they gave me options to explore my talent. They encouraged me to pursue what I felt I was passionate about and just lightly pushed me in that direction. At a young age, I was interested in art and art history and my parents saw that spark I had when I visited a museum or art gallery. This small act of letting me just ease into my passion was a game changer when I knew I wanted to make art a career. The support that my parents showed me was beyond helpful in shaping me into the artist I am today.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am an artist that loves to explore early processes of art. I have always looked at how paint is made and the primitive way paper is made and tried to copy these processes in my own work. I have recently learned about the process of iconography and I have added some of the elements to my own paintings. I am currently working on a book that gives a detailed account of how art was produced in Medieval times. I plan to work on an array of art books that teach children about the elements of art.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal that drives my creative journey is giving back to the youth. I believe that artwork is made for the future. The future generations make it important and keep it relevant. For example, the work of Van Gogh now has more power than when it was made. So the youth is important to the survival of art in the future. I wish to inspire the youth to continue creating and growing to love art so that it will be alive in the future.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
We should support artists by pairing them up with engineers and scientists to help solve hard problems. For example, the S.T.E.A.M. movement pairs the arts with the current science core in schools. This is a step into the future of how students could learn science. By adding an artistic element, the visual impact of science comes alive. Many artists are too dependent on the current art market but in the scenario, of pairing up science and technology there could be a collective grant that works on one or many big projects. What would Apple be without the vision of Steve Jobs? The visionary is needed to plant the seed of
what is to come. We are too divided in this current ecosystem and with the pairing of the arts and science, we might make a more colorful and bright future.
