We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Peter Von Taborsky a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Peter, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My family was never wealthy financially but we had great life experiences. Growing up I was always surrounded by amazing people. My parents pushed me to be active but let me choose the things that I wanted to take part in. I am fortunate to have many mentors along the way. My mom & dad, my older brother, friends & their parents, school teachers, scout & church leaders. They all had a hand in shaping me to become who I am today. It was definitely a community thing.

Peter, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Peter & I’m a podcaster…
In the grand scheme of things I’ve only been a podcaster for a short part of my life. Last month i turned 55 years old, I started podcasting in my late 40s, I am an older dude in a younger persons game. SCOTCH AND “good” CONVERSATION was started with the idea of hanging out with friends, drinking some beers & talking while using it as an advertisement for my small business that I was running at the time. It was supposed to be just a hobby until I found the next thing that would fill up my free time.
Flash forward 352 weekly episodes later, SCOTCH AND “good” CONVERSATION is my career, it’s my passion & its my artistic outsource. It’s also the thing that drives me crazy, wakes me up in the middle of the night wondering if I’m doing it good enough & makes me proud as hell
I’ve been lucky enough to have conversations with internationally known rockstars, award winning filmmakers, well-known authors & actors. I’ve also talked to many friends, an ex employer who fired me, my favorite teacher from high school, former girlfriend‘s & even my mother on numerous occasions. It’s been going on now for 352 weeks in a row And I have absolutely no intention of stopping anytime soon.
I have won awards, Made a lot of friends, had a boatload of fun, all while feeling like I’ve never compromised along the way. I am very fortunate that I get to do what I do for a living.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
In 2015, on a whim I started a podcast called SCOTCH AND “good” CONVERSATION as a way to advertise my vintage menswear company. Truth be told, it was more of just an excuse to sit and share some drinks with my friends. It was designed to be a one on one, conversational style interview show. A way to get to know my friends & myself better. Within days of putting out my first episode I felt like I was onto something good. I was very surprised by the overwhelming response & very quickly was able to get some very amazing businesses to sponsor the show. 352 weekly episodes todate, my little side hustle project has become my full-time job. And I love it!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
SCOTCH AND “good” CONVERSATION was always meant to be an in person, Conversational style podcast. The unfortunate events of 2020 changed all of that pretty quickly. The home studio that I built out a year before to accommodate a couple people comfortably sat almost empty for two years except for myself & previously unheard of technology called zoom. Reading body language quickly went out the window & I had to rely on more vocal cues & people’s eyes in order to read how the conversation was going.. In a lot of ways I felt like I was starting over from scratch. I soon learned that my situation had actually enabled me to reach out to a wider, more diverse list of people to talk with. I started sending out any requests to bigger, more well-known guest and to my surprise, they started coming on the podcast.
