We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lashanta & Lateasha Witherspoon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lashanta & Lateasha , thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of our company which is LLG Transportation Consultants is a representation of our personal names Lashanta, Lateasha and Gregory. The “G” represents Gregory who is our deceased brother who passed away in 2004 from cancer.
Lashanta & Lateasha , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
LG is a family-owned business that originated with two sisters, Lashanta and Lateasha Witherspoon. The “G” in our company name is a way to honor and memorialize our beloved brother Gregory. Growing up in Central Alabama with limited opportunities inspired us to start a business that offered others financial freedom.
We grew up in the trucking industry. Our father started driving dump trucks over 30 years ago, and for the last 20 years, he has been a successful Owner-Operator! As expected, he began teaching us the details of the trucking industry when we traveled with him. We have experienced first-hand the financial benefits, freedom, and stability associated with being an Owner-Operator. Our goal is to help as many people as possible experience the same or better!
Lateasha contributes the educational and logistical resources to LLG Transportation Consultants. Her experience as a dispatcher, HR Manager for a hazmat company paired with her Secondary Education background equipped her with the skills and tools required to help small motor carriers. She loves everything trucking related!
Lashanta contributes to LLG Transportation Consultants by managing the financials and operations of the business. With over 13+ years of experience in the finance and accounting fields, she has been able to provide the tools small motor carriers require to help scale, leverage, and grow their businesses to 6 figures in 1 year!Together we have been able to create two dynamic duo businesses and help many small business companies exceed excellence!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When we first started our business January 2019, we got the initial $300 to start our LLC from our father. We did not have additional capital at the time to fund the business, so our father was willing to help us get started. We used to put $25 each in our business account every two weeks from our paychecks to show consist deposits to the banks and lenders. With the deposits, we were able to get our office supplies such as our laptop, printer, etc. then we used the remaining amount to start building our business credit. We did this until we officially launched our business November 2020, and from that point forward we begin to receive funds on our own from ongoing sales. In less than 6 months, we generated a 6-figure business. Start small and remain consistent and eventually you will reach your goal!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
How we built our audience on social media was posting free, valuable information pertaining to the trucking industry daily. Many people were lacking the knowledge and knowing of starting a trucking company and understanding compliance. Asking friends and family is good, but its nothing like having a mentor or coach who knows the ins and outs of the industry. It is important that your audience understand that you are willing to help and assist without anything in return. We never post something that we are not 100% confident with explaining. You want to make sure that whatever you post can be fact checked. It’s also important to have information that is relatable to the clients and they are able to learn from. Being authentic, caring, showing compassion and serving with integrity goes along way in any industry. Know your audience, connect with them and be committed to serving them daily rather its a post, reel, going live or answering their DM questions. Simply being YOU and showing up as YOUR authentic self is what attracts and keeps your clients/customers coming back for more.
