We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Monica McMillan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Monica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
I come from a lineage of entrepreneurial grandparents and parents and they all had care, they all had creativity and expertise in their zone of genius. When I graduated college from Meredith College in Raleigh North Carolina I was scared to go into Corporate America, I knew that I wanted to be an entrepreneur so I chose a nanny career. During my college journey I produced many events with my best friend Logan Alphin and they were the vibe of the city – we were able to bring so many entrepreneurs, designers, musicians and creatives across-the-board, all in one space. With my Marketing and Design background, I felt as though I needed to do something that intertwined those two focus points. Those were two things that came natural to me and those were essential resources that I knew that I could help my community with.
I started my business in August 2019 and until now I have continuously obtained hard feedback on what our community can afford, what we need, and what we enjoy. There are so many agencies that are built the same from the workflow to the design that they put out but one thing that has always been missing was the relationship with the client’s mentality because entrepreneurs are stressed so how can we actually support them.
Monica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since I was 15 years old I was able to work beside many small business owners that created a one-in-a-lifetime experience. Seeing how they operated, cared about their employees, and customers and clients was the greatest fulfillment to me. Once I graduated college, I chose the path of becoming a Nanny because I was able to work on finding the vision for my company, Creators and Company. I always saw a gap specifically for underserved communities of accessibility, quality, and education that was specifically in marketing and design to be the support system for small business owners.
From there we created at Creators and Company a lifestyle space for legacy and Vibe creators, where we cater to your design, website, photography, and marketing needs and have Zen Zones each month to connect in Yoga, Soul Coaching, DEI practices, and more.
In late 2020 I was able to take my business full time for one and a half years and starting at the beginning of 2022 it was a struggle because I was not clear on my vision or who I truly wanted to serve on what I actually wanted to offer. I was able to get a mentor, a soul coach, and a music therapist really allowed me to work my personal things out so that I could dive deeper into my purpose and what I wanted to serve for my business. So, I decided that I wanted more experience, specifically from an agency since I had never had a corporate job. I became a Project Coordinator where I assisted in running the show at the agency and assist with large and small accounts.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
We believe in true collaborators because there is no I in TEAM so that our clients can join our creators sessions for 2 hours and create all that is possible in that timing and delivered in lightning speed because it’s a together thing. I created this business because most times you just need a support system that’s actually passionate about what you’re doing and is in it for the long run.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It is more than just values and practice, it is a lifestyle where the legacy and vibes go full circle. The journey for me was full of getting sick from stress but today I say no more because of the lifestyle I created for myself and supporting the community around me. The most rewarding aspect of it is bringing visions to life and collaborating.
