Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jordan Ryan . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jordan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
I like to live life with no regrets and instead I try to learn from my choices that maybe weren’t always for the best. I started my makeup artistry career on the retail side of the industry. I worked 40+ hours a week as a manager in cosmetics and for years I put off pursuing my passion of working for myself as an artist and blamed it on my job. In hindsight I saw that it wasn’t that holding me back, but instead, myself. I lived in my head and unfortunately constantly compared myself and my work to other artists around me. What is that saying? Comparison is the thief of joy? Speaking from experience I will say this is completely true. It took a big life change and a global pandemic for me to decide to finally pursue my passion of makeup artistry 100% and I haven’t looked back since.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Since my teens and honestly even before, I had a passion for all things beauty. My first stand out memory was helping out a family friend on her wedding day by doing her makeup when her artist canceled day of. I was more excited than nervous to glam her and I’ll never forget her reaction when seeing herself in the mirror. She loved it! From that moment I knew there was something there. After a few years of pursuing other career paths, I finally decided to merge my passion for makeup with my experience in retail and landed my dream job (at the time) as a manager for MAC cosmetics! I learned so much during this time and was really able to hone in to my style of artistry. After nearly 5 years with MAC, I accepted a management position with Charlotte Tilbury. I absolutely loved my time with this brand and still use almost all of her products for personal and client use to this day. Fast forward to the last few years, I think something was awoken in me during the pandemic. As cliché as it sounds I felt like “life is too short” to not chase your dreams and do what you love, so I decided to do just that! I rebranded and relaunched my makeup artistry business and I have been very blessed with steady business ever since. I specialize in bridal, event, and print artistry that highlights natural beauty with soft to full glam. I collaborate with my clients to create a polished look perfect for them and their event. My goal is for them to leave feeling like the most beautiful version of themselves. I am most proud that I launched and grew my personal business during a very challenging time in the world. I am extremely thankful to each and every client who has chosen me to be a part of their lives if even for a single makeup appointment.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Take chances on the independent and up and coming local artists/ small businesses! I think as a society we tend to be creatures of habit in a lot of areas including choosing where to get beauty services done. There are so many talented individuals that work incredibly hard and provide an amazing experience for their clients, if given the opportunity
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Unlearning the “fast food” makeup mentality was a lesson for me. During my years in cosmetic retail I learned how to do very fast makeup appointments. Although, that is a beneficial skill at times, being able to slow down and spend more time curating a personalized look with each client is as equally important. I strive to be an efficient, yet timely artist that produces consistent and quality work.
