Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyle Sigmon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kyle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Our first album is really meaningful for me. It was released in August 2022 and contains 15 songs. I had written several of these songs years before our band even existed. I’ve been a singer/songwriter since the early 2000s and always wrote based on what was inspiring me at the moment. At some point in my life I just wanted to make the type of music that I loved listening to, which was a lot of 90’s alternative and early 2000s rock music. I was also just going through some changes and had learned some deep meaningful lessons about life through the hard stuff. These songs allowed me to work through a lot of big ideas and were a fun and creative outlet for me.
Our band, which is a 4-piece rock band with 2 guitars, bass, and drums, began as a 90’s cover band to perform local gigs under the name, “Squirrel Jam.” Covid changed everything for us, as it did everyone. We used the time when no gigs were happening to learn more original content. This was when we shifted from a cover band to something we found a little more fulfilling as artists and creatives. This project had more gravitas. It was something for us to take a little more seriously. We came up with “Seeking Gravity’ based on some of the lyrics from this first album, which shares the same name.
I could write a whole lot more about each and every song on that album and why it means something to me, but that would take a while. I did share a bit about each song on my podcast called, “Still Figuring It Out…” if anyone is interested in hearing more about the themes behind each of those 15 songs. Generally speaking, it is an album about how we go through change, how suffering often brings about the most change, and how we can find hope and resilience that leads to higher levels of consciousness and character development. The key message is that sometimes we must fall apart to be remade, we must be broken down to be rebuilt, and that through all of the struggles and hardships in life, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. Even in the midst of an ending, there is more to come.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
The main thing to know is that Seeking Gravity just wants to make some really great rock music. What sets us apart is that there is more depth in our lyrics. We want there to be an element of inspiration, solidarity, and camaraderie with our listeners. We know that life is hard. We know that nothing stays the same. If you have never experienced anything difficult in your life, it will probably happen at some point in the future. We want our music to resonate with people and we want the messages to mean something to people. Like any good art it will take on new meaning for each person as they listen depending on what they’re going through. Our first album has some heaviness, some beauty, some awe and wonder. All things that we find in life itself.
We are playing more shows in the near future. We’re from the Western part of NC and are starting to book more shows in surrounding areas. We hope this music can find ears, hearts, and minds of folks who will be inspired to face their own struggles with greater confidence and find hope that things will only get better in the end. If not better, than at least you will have a better perspective and can handle the pain of growing and changing.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I don’t know this for sure, but something that I think might be unique about myself and other creatives is that my art is almost something I have to do. I think some folks might just wish that they could write a song or might want to try that at some point, but for me it is like a lifeline. My songwriting is therapeutic. It is almost as natural as needing to talk to someone or a therapist. It helps me get feelings out and process certain things in a way that nothing else does.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I think resilience is about bouncing back and keeping going despite challenges. I also think it has a lot to do with redefining success. We are far from being famous or a household name. For us as a band, the whole journey is worth it even if we never make it super big. We are living out a dream to make music and it is fulfilling to be able to do what we are doing. The key to success is to celebrate the small victories but never stop moving forward. We are still early on in this process of gaining an audience and making music and we know that it is not an easy road. We are just happy to be on the road and feel fortunate to have what we have as a band. We are 4 guys who have a solid bond, a friendship, and we are partners in this thing. We know that what we have is rare and so we cherish every time we get together to practice, record, play a gig, or just hang out together. Any commercial success we get will be icing on the cake.
