We recently connected with Tammy Rodgers and have shared our conversation below.
Tammy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
As I started this business venture I thought to myself, “How can I fuse together the love for my family and my passion for pets?” So I decided to incorporate my son’s acting career, my daughters modeling career, and the love for my pets. And I came up with the name Puparazzi instead of Paparazzi!
For me this truly is a blend of everything I love and care about wrapped up in a dream and vision that I look forward to sharing with you!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started in the dog grooming industry when I was 15 years old, I had taken some hands on lessons with an old friend of mine that had learned to groom from a poodle breeder Ann Tipton. At that time I had pretty much learned to groom poodles. My dad at the time worked for Crystal bottled waters as a route man and used to tell his customers about me and for a small fee I would groom there pups . I still look back at old photos of the dogs and me grooming on the back patio of my parents house year round. I am pretty much a self taught groomer but have taken classes over the years at seminars and such to always improve my craft and keep me up to date with all of the new trends. You can say that in over 40 years things have changed a lot. I have worked for many different locations and business and have also worked in other areas as well but grooming has always helped me pay the bills. When I graduated from high school in 1984 I had the opportunity to go to Veterinarian school but had decided to chase a passion of mine and go to work at the horse race track Turf Paradise I had worked my way onto the back side through a horse I used to ride by a friends house named Sunny that was sold to a trainer at Turf Paradise Scott Rogers he had told me to come to the gate in the mornings and have him paged and he would come sign me in, that was my first glimpse of the back side and I was hooked and wanted to learn everything and he taught me all of the basics and got me my grooms license. Over many years I was a horse groom, pony rider, exercise rider, sold tickets at the betting windows and was also a licensed Trainer by the age of 22. During all of that time I still groomed dogs in between morning and afternoon chores. Dog grooming has been my career a long time. After many years of working for others it was time in my 40’s to go out on my own and create a very upscale mobile business that stood out from the rest. I had gone through a very difficult divorce and had received a large amount of money from a 401K and during economic crisis Puparazzi Mobile Pet Spaw was created. I used almost every penny of that money to fulfill my vision and 12 years later we are now a Franchise actively seeking new Franchisees with a love for pets and a entrepreneurial spirit to help us expand the brand! I think one thing I want people to know is I was very blessed with my success and we really feel it is important to give back so every Franchisee partners with a local rescue or animal shelter that is a non profit. that can consist of donating money, services , being actively involved in their events or raising money for them. We like to help rescue dogs get adopted and find homes through social media and education.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
Over the years we have had a lot of our clients have asked us about healthy treat options , we decided that maybe we should create our own brand of dog treats and private label them to our customers and allow them to shop while we groom their pets. We offer many necessary items in a basket that we take to their doors from CBD, collars and leashes, apparel , dental products shampoos and conditioners and more. We find it is a great little thing we can offer that they don’t have to go out and purchase in a store front, it also adds to our revenue stream as additional income.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
After nearly 40 years of carefully grooming pets in salons, animal hospitals, and pet resorts, I have often been called the “Dog Whisperer” by my clients and co-workers, I am often recognized as the groomer that can groom any pet; even those with, how you say it, “personality”. My gentle touch and free spirited smile has a way of relating with pets. Our clients are not just our customers they are part of our family.
