We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Roberto Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Roberto, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
When I bought my first semi-professional camera it came with a device to make timelapses. It was a beautiful afternoon during monsoon season in Arizona and decided to try it out. After I got home, processed the footage and saw my first timelapse, I was hooked. I realized that every frame that I had taken was different. I also noticed it allowed me to see the passing of the storm like I had never seen it. At this moment I stumbled upon the understanding that timelapses were not only a way to show the beauty of nature but that they are a type of life hack. I realized that through timelapses we can see nature in a way that we are not biologically designed to view and, more importantly, that it could help us understand processes that were unfamiliar to us. As timelapses continued to captivate my mind, I began experimenting with different things; sunsets, sunrises, clouds, flowers blooming, etc. The more I dove into timelapses, the more beauty and secrets I seemed to unravel. At this point I knew that this was something I felt strongly passionate and authentically curious about. I knew I had to dedicate my life to capturing the beauty of nature through timelapse and sharing it with people all over the world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Rms Timelapse Photography is dedicated to timelapse production. Rms Timelapse Photography specializes in creating timelapses in harsh and difficult to access environments. Roberto Murphy is an adventurer, traveler, explorer and enjoys getting out in nature, climbing, mountain biking, scuba diving, mountaineering. What sets Rms Timelapse Photography apart from others is how we combine passion, dedication, skill and creativity to venture into remote locations and produce the footage that surpasses our clients expectations. This is the most rewarding feeling. To see your customer’s mind blown by the footage you captured for them.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Rms Timelapse Photography continues to be funded through the personal efforts of Roberto Murphy and Brittany Vantassel. We have looked for remote jobs that allow us to have time and location flexibility and to fund our personal projects and purchase or rent the necessary gear to achieve our vison. It has been a team effort involving work at odd hours but it all makes sense once you see your projects come to life.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish there had been Facebook photography groups when I started my photographic journey. I find it beautiful that now a days you can; share your photography, receive constructive criticism and have your specific questions answered by colleagues all over the world, all in one place. People from different backgrounds and experiences are willing to share their knowledge and help others.
