We were lucky to catch up with John Videler recently and have shared our conversation below.
John, appreciate you joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
The most important lesson I learned at a previous job was how to communicate and listen to people. This job was as a waiter at an Italian restaurant in my hometown. Being a good listener and communicator is so important in the service industry. I feel that everyone at some time in their life should work at a restaurant. It teaches you how to listen.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My father was a photographer and I enjoyed watching him create incredible images for Pepperidge Farm, Godiva Chocolates and Campbell Soup. When I saw his images on packaging, I was sold. I knew this is what I wanted to do. Even though he was a successful product photographer I became a multi genre photographer. Meaning I would photograph mostly everything. With every genre comes a certain amount of focus. I would learn about photography through seminars and would practice shooting a lot. I stay up to the minute with new technologies and always offering my clients something that they need. When drones became popular, I got my license and started to fly. I have made a good following on my aerials.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Motivation is very tough on creatives. When you are producing for clients all of the time, you can begin to lose focus on some aspects of the creative process. To fight this, I will read a lot, photograph things for my own personal being and attend seminars to learn something new.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Working for myself is very rewarding in itself, but seeing the clients reactions to your photography of their product or of themselves is the most rewarding.
