We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tianna Avant a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tianna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I came up with the name of my company while working on a class project in college. A part of the assignment was to create a logo but before I could come up with a logo, I needed a name. I had an idea of what I wanted my brand’s image and personality to consist of but it was terribly hard to come up with a logo and name that represented both.
One day I was writing down all of these super inauthentic suit company names that didn’t really create a spark for me. I knew I wanted to do more than just custom suits some day, I wanted the name to be kind of versatile in that aspect. I took a quick break after about 5 minutes my very own last name, Avant, just popped in my head and that was the spark I needed!
It works out perfectly because my last name gave me that multipurpose vibe that I was aiming for, not to mention I am able to create brand value on a more intimate level. My company is will provide the best of the best service because there’s nothing I value more than my last name and the things and people that are attached to it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I got into the fashion/custom suiting industry by taking a great deal of risks. I’ve always had the vision of simply wanting more out of life at a very young age, so once I became old enough to make certain decisions I moved away from my hometown to make room for greater opportunities.
Everything I know about business and fashion, I had to go out and acquire myself. There was no one giving me the keys to be successful in this industry. I became disciplined and I zoned in on teachings and reading about the things I wanted/needed to know. In turn, I discovered a ton of important things that I didn’t know I needed to know.
Rarely anyone has time to teach you every single step to success, and if they did you would still fall short of your potential. Their journey is not your journey no matter how similar the ultimate goal. God created all of our journeys to be unique, it’s up to you to accept your own path or continue rerouting trying to follow someone else’s.
I offer full luxury services to my clients, from custom bespoke suits to hair/facial grooming. While I absolutely have a passion for what I do, providing these services is only the base layer of the cake. Ultimately, I want supporters and potential clients to look at my entire company and not only see God’s work but become inspired to do the amazing things they were once afraid and/or discouraged to do. My goal is to be the reason at least one person decides to keep going, and maybe someone else will be inspired by the one I inspired. Trustfully, that pattern will continue to positively repeat itself.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think a lot of non-creatives often struggle with understanding why I take the risks that I take and how come I’m able to take those risks fearlessly.
Truth is, I am such a “go for the gold” kind of woman so I make it my mission to shoot as far as I can dream. Every single risk I take scares the crap out of me in reality, but I go for it anyway. Allowing a calculated risk to scare you completely out of even trying will only bring regret and I never want to wonder what could have been. I am in love with what I do, I am blessed enough to have the ability to be brilliant at this job, and I am grateful to have been in the position to accept the opportunity to have my own business. All that means is I’m willing to do anything and take any risk within my beliefs in order to discover my limitless potential.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The key to growing clientele for my company has been consistency. It is certainly easier said than done and it does get a little overwhelming when trying to figure out what I want to present to my audience. But the more my work is exposed the more curious people become.
