We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brandi Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brandi below.
Brandi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
I grew up with both sets of grandparents & grandparents with multiple great aunts and uncles on top of my parents so If im being honest, there isnt one hero here. My whole foundation is deeply enriched so its a given for me to say that they are a huge part of my hero tree. My great grandparents lived to their late 90’s early 100’s and I have one set of grandparents left in their 80’s. Their life, their resilience, determination to build a fruitful home foundation and instill so much in the foundation of who I am, makes me so proud to be from their bloodline. The history is deep, the wisdom, knowledge, experience, life lessons etc are so potent that I can wholeheartedly say I would not be who I am or where I am without their presence and hand in my existence.
My siblings & parents as well because of all they have endured and overcome with such grace and persistence. My tribe, whew. Tiara, Brandee, Keddrick, & David (Drastic) . To have a circle of people who are as deeply invested in your soil as you are is a blessing. We can all be battling the world on our shoulders and holding it together yet still we find our strength in each other. Our journey’s are intertwined in ways unexplainable on surface. We are rooted,
My Life Partner, Darryl., the epitome of what it means to be my person, friend, lover, protector & provider of the heart & all . He is in the military and has so many responsibilities, from fighting on behalf of this countries obligations, being an incredible father, brother, son etc, I get so much peace in seeing him remove that armor for me (mentally, emotionally, spiritually & physically) makes me so proud that he feels safe enough to do so. I am constantly motivated, encouraged and confident in my capabilities by how he speaks into me, shows up for me and allows me in spaces no one other wise would be allowed. I watch him as he speaks to others, leads others & stands in his authority daily in work and home (& HONEYYYYYYY talk about a turn on…the ultimate aphrodisiac ) I am truly my whole-self with a partner who sees the beauty of watching me bloom.
Now, my ultimate Hero. I will unashamedly say, myself. I am so very inspired by the woman i see in the mirror. By the the time I was 21 -24 years of age id already experienced so many things, Friends being killed, a then husband who was jailed for murder, buried my father, lost 2 children to miscarriage’s /stillbirth, battled depression in silence, overcome fear of abandonment, finished college, gained certifications, started a career in radio industry, PR, started /executed a non profit, created several documentaries, worked on major commercial campaigns & climbed the ladder in corporate America. & through all that I’ve seen, experienced, loss & gained I never lost my heart. I’ve always seen the beauty of the possibility of tomorrow, even if I was struggling to make it through the day. At 37 years old, I feel so blessed and grateful for the lessons, life’s jewels, the joy and unexpected experiences that have made me this strategically crafted masterpiece God has decided to create.
I aspire to be the expanded/evolved version of myself when I grow up.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started working at 15 years old and was so blessed to have mentors early in life. Even though I had no idea they were mentors. I was always drawn to the people who were a bit older but stern, knowledgeable and natural leaders. I entered Corporate America at 17 which was not typical because at that time 18 was for entry level in like call center type environments. (I only did call center for 3 months and was moved to corporate) In every job I was an avid student, with the mindset of I’m here to learn and go and I had that mind frame until I was about 21 then It became about building connections and growing simultaneously. I’ve always had an extroverted energy about me, but I really am introverted which is why all my work and most of my accolades are only known once people find out about them because I rarely discuss them.
At 21, I entered the radio industry and was mentored by some of the great’s in Dallas Kuwn Dalini & Nate Quick, just to name a two because even in their memory (may they rest easily) I will never forget the impact they left in me and so many others. I then became a part of radio street team, started hosting open mic’s and working with Houston Artist’s, PR & marketing firms. After that, I did PR management , artist management & decided while I was successful I wasn’t passionate about those things. I cared deeply about the soul of people because while working and being so close to so many artist’s I saw the struggles behind the scene. I saw the silent battles & that was what I wanted to help them navigate, not getting a song on the radio. This became clear after my father passed.
In 2011 I created my first Non profit & campaign that launched documentaries & so much more. By 23 I was featured on documentary TV, and had credits on so many major campaigns I knew I’d inadvertently found my purpose & can you believe I did all of this and my family had no clue! It wasn’t until the documentary was released and they started seeing promotional stuff around in malls and things that they connected it to me. LOL. Talk about secret squirrel…That is I.
Here it is 2022 and I’m still going! Its such a blessing to see my evolution and to see how so much of my vision has truly created my entire life. I live & breathe my purpose because it is fulfilling. Not easy. Purposeful. I am clear on my why so it keeps me grounded, but the depths of the journey are at times a lot to handle if you aren’t planted. Now aday’s people want things quick and easy but for me, I’ve never been enticed by that, I mean I know what fast life can and will do to you if you fall victim to it, so I’ve always appreciated the slow and steady burn.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
David “Drastic” Randall
I met Drastic at an event I put together for artists in 2011. I was at the time both apart of a group & managing at the same time and I had put together an artist development /promotional event for artist to come and network with industry executives. I had radio people there from both Dallas &Houston and artist signed up from all over, from Minnesota, Colorado, Atlanta, Dallas , Houston and a few other places, I still have the sign up sheets in my time capsule but it was over 50 artist that came. The proceeds were used to give back to displaced (home-less), & urban cities /food deserts in Dallas & Houston. Drastic was there networking and an artist who would be performing. He gave me his CD and said if you ever need anything let me know. Now, as a woman in the industry I am blessed that I never felt pressured to sell sexuality to get in any rooms. I was mentored by people early on and by the time I developed any type of sex appeal Id already built a reputation based on my knowledge and network. Plus, the way I was brought up, I never ever considered it an option. So when he said this I didn’t feel any type of way ( plus, drastic doesn’t give that vibe at all you wouldn’t even misconstrue his being cool with flirting).
A few months later I was putting together some logistics for a tour I was putting together and called him. We ended up talking for hours and that conversation solidified my desire to focus on the soul of the artist’s and people oppose to just music. Fast forward, sitting in Barnes and Nobles for a meeting, a campaign was created, and before we knew it, we were downtown getting DBA”s & strategizing what would be 3 months of filming for a campaign later released as a documentary and music soundtrack .
Drastic was the first person who understood my chaos. Really, the documentary started as a thought, then a brainstorm, then hours and hours of phone conversations that felt like therapy. The things people freely talk about now, we created a film about way before households wanted to even acknowledge it. It was a very emotional time and we both were going through second tier awakenings at the time as well. Truly intense. After interviewing over 30 people in multiple states, filming their emotional journey’s of healing, molestation, abuse, racism, the criminal justice system, religion, and so much more it made us that much closer. People trusted us and wanted us to be with them in their own depth of transitions and it was both horrifying and beautiful at the same time. Through the whole journey, traveling together, getting rejected together, having meetings with so many prominent people, closing so many deals etc through it all what connected us was that we truly care so much about people.
Drastic has his own energy drink (On Demand), & it is literally all over the world, he has created music with and for some of the most powerful people in the industry, super innovative and his creativity is out of this world. I am truly grateful to have not only a business partner but he is truly a brother. He see’s understands and has a way of pushing what I have deeply hidden inside creatively/interpersonally out. Oh he also has chickens, lizards, & all other kind of animals/reptiles, he’s an herbalist and so much more. Just a super cool dude. He also has a beautiful wife I went to school with & daughter that embodies all of his energy which is so amazing!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part for me would be, the release & reemergence of self on so many levels, For me being able to put what I feel inside out in any way I want, any form I want, whenever I want & impact so many people by just being myself is the ultimate reward. I love the fact that when I look at myself, I SEE all of me, unfiltered and clear. That brings me such peace because I know that ultimately is all anyone can ask for. If at the end of the day when you are done letting it all out if It doesn’t grant you peace, healing and a deeper inner knowing of self , what are you doing it for?
