We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Apollo Mighty a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Apollo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I guess it was around 18 right after high school. I recognized that music was the only thing that gave me joy and peace. I can still remember the exact moment in the bathroom at my moms house that i decided that I wanted to sing. I was about to leave for college to study business and while I was excited to get out of Memphis all I wanted to do was create more music and tell more of my story. That how it started.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
So i’m a singer songwriter. I create music and visuals and i put on quite a live show. I started releasing music back in 2013 and ive been doing so ever since then. A lot goes into being an independent artist. Im in control of every aspect of the product from conception to the end goal. I do all my own writing, I work with some amazing people that help me come up with the concepts for my videos. I also have dabbled in podcasting. I release merch around my releases and thats also a team effort. My brand is soulful and raw and unapologetic. It really encompasses my past, my present, and my future. I feel like I tell my story but its relatable and it includes the works and ideas of so many other artists.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I definitely wish Id taken more advantage of grants when i was first starting out. I think cities that have so much history in music should do a better job of informing artists about those resources as well as creating more so that more people can benefit from them. I don’t like how competitive it is sometimes in music. Creating is hard enough, I dont like how it feels to be pitted against other people that look like me that want the same things as me. We just want to be successful and I feel like theres enough room for all of us to do so.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me my art is like therapy. Its apart of my self love. Creating has taught me alot about self acceptance. I can listen to music I created years ago and feel gratitude for the person I was then and the person I am now that grew from those experiences.
