We recently connected with Tiffani Denham and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffani, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
As a full-time digital content creator, one of the biggest challenges is getting other brands and businesses to recognize my content as work, not just a pretty image or creative video on social media. Many times brands will reach out and comment about how much they love my work and want to collaborate with me in exchange for free products or service. In some cases, product seeding is appropriate. However, in order to consistently produce a quality product and remain a sustainable business, monetary compensation is necessary.

Tiffani, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tiffani Denham; I’m a travel expert and digital content creator. I create travel and lifestyle content to help female travelers identify unique travel destinations, share tips on how to get to those destinations, and travel companions (products) that make their travel experiences more enjoyable.
I recently left my career as an Engineering Consultant of over 11 years to pursue my passion for content creation and travel. With a background in engineering, I naturally love solving problems. I still solve problems, just in a different space.
When I started traveling frequently, I quickly noticed the lack of BIPOC in the travel space. Because this was also the case in my engineering career, it because a passion of mine to expose more people that look like me to the world of travel. I wanted to see more people that look like me in more destinations outside of the United States, in more airline lounges, in more national parks, etc. My mission is to curate travel experiences that make others say, “If Tiffani can do it, surely I can too.”
One of my passions is to reshape the narrative of black and brown travelers, showing that there are rich experiences accessible to all.
Additionally, from a global perspective, I take responsibility for exposing the world to the real black experience. I see how mainstream media portrays black people and notice the stereotypes others make about black people when I travel. I don’t like it. I want to be responsible for showing the world what being black really is. The world needs to see black people beyond the image that’s been portrayed.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I have always been authentically myself. I’m confident that my audience has consistently grown because, above all else, I add value. I firmly believe that If what I’m saying doesn’t add value, I don’t need to say it.
Additionally, in this era of quick consumption, from a creative’s perspective in my field, everyone wants to be the first to present or share information, even if that means compromising the accuracy of the information shared. I’m very cautious when it comes to sharing information with my audience. If Breakfast with Tiffani shared it, you can rest assured that the information has been confirmed as accurate with credible sources.
I never want my audience or a client to question my character.
When you are first starting to build a presence on social media, be authentic. Brands that go far are honest and genuine.
Listen and watch what your audience responds to; they will tell you what they like and don’t like.
When you consistently add value to your audience, they will engage with your content without you requesting them to. That’s how you build a sustainable brand.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m currently in a pivot, lol! After working in Corporate America for over 10 years, the full-time entrepreneur life is totally different. I no longer have a payroll department processing a check for me every two weeks, so if I want to see a paycheck, I’m fully responsible. Additionally, as a one-woman team, at any given time, I can be the Sales Manager, Marketing Director, IT personnel, Contracting Specialist, etc. I’ve never backed down from a challenge, and these challenges are different. But I like them; challenges like negotiating my first contract or figuring out how to take a marking campaign from concept to execution. And when it’s all said and done, there’s no greater feeling than having a client comment about how pleased they are with your work and their eagerness to work with you in the future.
