Alright, Hilda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?

Yes, I am a happy small business owner and certainly happier than when I had a regular job! My story is similar to many entrepreneurs out there that hold two or more jobs before deciding to fully commit to their own business. I had two full time jobs, a regular job and my balloon business, for a while when I finally decided that it was time to invest 100% of my time and effort to my own business. It was a tough decision considering the risk, insecurity and uncertainty of the new financial responsibilities and expectations. I have to say that I am very fortunate to have the support of my family and friends, they are always there to cheer on! The road to a successful business is uphill and difficult, and I am not there by any means! These past two years have been particularly challenging (we are not even going there!), but there is always light ahead. Hard work and determination are my motto and how can I not be happy when my job is to deliver smiles every day!

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?

Quality of our final product and a service our clients can always count on. Our business has mostly grown by referrals from clients and mouth to mouth, every satisfied customer and every guest and attendee to the events we style can see the quality of our installations, that is our instant business card! Also, it’s a commitment to always do better and go above and beyond. We are constantly improving and looking for ways to deliver the best final product possible.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.

I was first exposed to the world of event balloon decoration, a few years ago, when, while in the parent-teacher committee for my children’s school, I was assigned to decorate a large area for the after prom party. Faced with a huge blank space to decorate I started researching best ways to fill it up and bumped into balloon arches and columns, I haven’t looked back since then! . I dived into the balloon decoration industry, attended several seminars and workshops, practiced and learned. I’ve always had a passion for color and balloons give me the chance to paint with color every day! This industry has been hardly hit by the pandemic and it’s been two years of new challenges, I also decided to quit my full time regular job during this time. We are in the process of learning what’s the new reality for our business today and how to evolve to be able to plan for growth hopefully this year.
