We recently connected with NATASHA CAMERON and have shared our conversation below.
NATASHA , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
My goal is to create a legacy for my children’s, children, create jobs in my community and assist new entrepreneurs on their journey. My mission is simple – to keep our dollars circulating in our community and to be a part of restoring black economics.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a serial entrepreneur I operate several businesses, a non-profit, I am a published author, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Stonecrest Chamber of Commerce and serve as an Ambassador for the Rockdale Conyers Chamber of Commerce.
I am the owner of Thomas Williams Management, a property management & facility maintenance company, which is celebrating 10 years in business this year; AD Beauty & Hair™, a beauty and hair supply boutique located in Conyers, GA; and the Founder of Cameron’s Angels Foundation, where we focus on women entrepreneur mentorship, self-worth building, the gift of sisterhood and accountability. Cameron’s Angels is my passion as I love helping people, especially women on their journey of entrepreneurship and it is also my way of giving back to the communities that have given so much to my family.
Creating a foundation that my children can build off when they are older and helping other women in business is what motivates me every day. A fun fact is that my businesses and my foundation were named after my children, as my goal is always to hustle for our own name.
20+ years ago, I wanted to be a youth probation officer but that quickly shifted in the summer of 2000 when I accepted a position at one of the largest Community Association Management companies on the east coast. Almost immediately I knew I wanted this to be my career path. Not only did I enjoy what I was doing but I also was good at it. However, this field can be draining and as I found myself getting overwhelmed and the desire to have multiple streams of income, I decided to tap into the beauty industry to level out my stress by doing new and fun things, and also closing the huge gap of little to no black-owned beauty supply stores. This was the creation of AD Beauty & Hair™, and when I finally discovered my purpose for Camerons Angels Foundation.
AD BEAUTY & HAIR™ is a boutique beauty supply store with products and services for everyone. Named after my youngest children Alima and Dylan (AD), we have haircare, skincare, nail care, health & wellness, accessories, and we exclusively carry A. Simone Kids Couture, which is my daughters clothing line. We also offer services like makeup, ear piercing, loc maintenance, hair sprinkles and beauty supply vending machine placement at the location of your choice. Additionally, we are the creators of For the Culture Small Business Saturdays where we allow new business owners without a store front to come into our shop and do a pop-up shop so they can introduce their product or service to the community.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Having two businesses that have nothing in common has been a breath of fresh air and it levels out majority of the time but there have been many instances when I have felt in over my head, especially dealing with employees in a sales environment at AD Beauty & Hair™. When staff get sick and call out or just don’t show up, I must pick up the slack, which has taken me away from the day-to-day duties of my property management company many days. And although I love the beauty supply store and everything it has allowed me to do in my community, this year I realized it was time to pivot my beauty supply store and brand to vending machines which require little to no time or oversight (staff).
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Many times, as a business owner you feel like you are the only person in the world that can get things done. And that is one of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn and unlearn quickly. One of the hardest things I have had to learn as a business owner is that I must trust others because I cannot do it all myself. My businesses are just as much my babies as my human babies are and it’s hard to imagine someone else can taking care of your babies. But stepping back and hiring a team that I trust, that is dependable and that I can delegate to, hiring a coach to help me scale my businesses to the next level to be more than just a “small business” has been a huge part of how I am able to know when it is time to pivot so that I can operate several businesses successfully.
No one can do everything by themselves. You must trust people to help you get things done because you will find yourself going in circles, which only causes you to lose money.
