Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sivan Ilan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sivan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Neither of my parents have a professional background in the arts or a creative field. Even though they didn’t relate to or fully understand my need for a creative outlet, they still gave me complete freedom and the confidence to pursue my creative interests and express myself through my art even as a small child. I’m very grateful for the fact that they didn’t try to steer me in a different direction they might have deemed more suitable for me or which they felt more comfortable with themselves. It takes time to grow as an artist and I feel really appreciative that I got to do so from a very young age.

Sivan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a textile artist who works mainly with weaving, and also quilting and embroidery. My medium and techniques are ever-evolving and changing since I put a very high emphasis on learning and growing as an integral part of my art practice. It’s important to me that my artwork will enhance the interior spaces in which it’s displayed and invoke a feeling of curiosity and play. My body of work is mostly composed of fine art pieces, and every once in a while I’ll get inspired and create a capsule of functional objects like home decor or table top linens.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to create and do what I love most each day. It brings a sort of alignment into my life that I haven’t experienced with anything else. An even more rewarding aspect is being able to enhance a client’s living environment and bring beauty and value into their home. Seeing my artwork in a beautifully designed and live-in space makes me feel very fulfilled.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
There is a misconception about art making or being an artist that it’s not a real job, but there is so much incredibly hard work that goes into building a career as an artist and it is in fact a viable profession that can provide financially. The stereotype about artists being in their studios all day painting away or sitting around waiting for inspiration to strike is a notion that needs to be put away for good.
