We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kiara Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kiara , thanks for joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.

My mother has done so many things right in my life and has impacted my life with my career path in a plethora of ways! As a child, my mother has literally always showed me genuine love, care and support in anything I wanted to accomplish in my world. The way she reminded me how loved and beautiful I am growing up helped me to have the confidence and love for myself that I have now at the age of 30 years old. She believed in my dreams at the age of ten years old with my pretend radio station which led to me being a graduated from Winston-Salem State University with my bachelor’s in Mass Communications/ Radio Broadcasting to now being the Founder of my Award Winning Radio Station in Charlotte, North Carolina, True Dreams Radio. My mother’s sense of humor was what kept me alive and full of laughter whenever I had dark days or hardships throughout my life. Her beauty, confidence, hustle mentality and support are some of the many things that truly made me realize what type of woman I wanted to become as a child. My mother’s relationship with God is the reason why God is in the center of my life and has become my best friend during my darkest and brightest times on this earth. Her intelligence is the reason why I prefer to use her as my Google than actual Google itself. The way my mother can create an idea and/ or event from scratch is the reason why I have created and executed over hundreds of events in the Carolinas throughout these past seven years with my station. My mother has been more than just a mom in my life, she has been my best friend, my protector, my “Right-Hand-Man” in anything I have wanted to accomplish in my life and most of all; She’s been a woman who has continuously kept me motivated to live my life to the fullest. Outside of God, my mother is the reason why I haven’t given up on myself nor my dreams. My mother is the reason I am able to give my love out unconditionally and know how to survive on my own because she has literally given me nothing but unconditional love and the keys to survival in this crazy world. I love Karla Thompson so much, I am so proud of my mother and her work ethic with being one of the top Realtors in Florida right now. Kiara , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

KiDeMo is originally from Durham, NC and was raised in Charlotte, NC. At ten years old she created her own radio station called K.94.10 in the walls of her room and that’s when she knew the radio industry would become a major part of her life. In May 2014, KiDeMo graduated from Winston-Salem State University with her degree in Mass Communications/ Radio Broadcasting. Her mother, who is her role model, helped her pursue her childhood dreams by creating her own internet radio station in January 2015, True Dreams Radio! True Dreams Radio was awarded for Best Radio Station in Charlotte. North Carolina for the 1st Annual Charlotte’s People Choice Awards in 2019. KiDeMo is currently a Community Activist with the Bahai Faith, Owner of True Music Bingo which is a trivia company celebrating all genres of African-American musicians and a Gardener at the Bahai Unity Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

I’ve built my core audience on social media by actually connecting with people in real life whether it was an art/ community or networking events or meeting someone randomly at the grocery store. I’ve never hesitated to speak about my brand publicly because it made it easier to promote on social media. Being able to actually connect with my followers outside of social media is the real marketing strategy in entrepreneurship. You can have thousands of followers and the best videos and pictures in the world; However, there is no better feeling than actually knowing your audience in real life. The longevity of your audience and loyalty last longer because when they watch you on social media, it’s like they can feel your true energy because they have met you personally. Always have digital or paper business cards with you at all times so people can follow you. Make sure to show love and support to your followers page, just like you would like for them to do with your accounts. Do not follow the trends on social media, I advise you to create your own because sometimes simplicity and originality stands out more than what’s popular on social media. Never allow social media to define your character. You control the narrative on your page so always be mindful of the content you decide to share on your pages. Never use social media to go live and vent when you are upset or frustrated with your business; Flip the script and create a sale, promo idea or simply laughter for your audience because trust me your feelings will change once you are at peace again. Do not feel force to have social media, if the time isn’t right for you then allow for yourself to market your company the “old school” way but yet the most powerful way; Word of mouth and in person marketing.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

My love and support that I have given to promoters, DJs, venues, entrepreneurs and artist throughout the world. I was raised from a loving and survival environment, so it has always been second nature to give out love and support to anyone around me while being able to survive whatever life has thrown at me. I never pretended to be someone that I am not, and I have always taken accountabilities for all my actions & words. My spirit is filled with the love of God and anyone who has ever crossed my path has felt that the most. My smile from ear to ear & outgoing personality in ever picture/ video I have taken with people is the reason my reputation is also very strong in my market because it shows again the genuine love and support, I have for those who I am working with. I’ve never sold or introduced you a dream that you couldn’t achieve in life. I always believed in others when they would question their own beliefs which truly made my reputation so strong and impactful in the Carolinas.
