We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Haleema Wright a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Haleema, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
There are 2 very important things, among the many, my parents did right. First, was instilling in me that nothing is impossible, and regardless who I was, what I did, or who I became, they would love and support me. Second, is “do you research”! Both my parents are bookworms and knowledge searchers. They’ve always encouraged me to find the answers to my questions, be open to exploring different ideas, be a good listener, ask questions and make informed decisions based on what I’ve learned. My dad would have me read books, and then have do research reports on them. I’m definitely a bibliography nerd because of him, lol!
Haleema, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Being in nature is my favorite places. Botancial & herbal life has always intrigued me, figuring out how things work is embedded in my nature. Once I learned that these beautiful pieces of nature pioneered the building block of drug discovery & modern medicine, I wanted to know more, and I wanted know why & how? People say you should drink herbal teas when you sick, but why? and what do they do in your body? what is in side of them that affects your body? Under the chemistry of compounds can be very complex whether it’s a cell in you body or a rose in a garden. Learning the similarities and difference has always been intriguing to me. As an herbal practitioner, I teach people how plant life can help heal and treat ailments in their body, and how herbalism can work with modern medicine. As much as I sell herbal based products, my real work is education, and teaching people how to better for themselves.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
In the age of social media & digital marketing the most effective marketing tool for me has very little to do with technology. It’s been work of mouth, my clients referring me to their family and friends. I’ve tried social media marketing, I’ve tried internet ads, attend tradeshows and pop-up shops too, but the majority of my clients come from , my current clients. They teach you in school that word of mouth is the best form of marketing, I’m here to tell you it’s true!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The 2 books that have influenced the management and of my business are the “E-Myth” by Michael E. Gerber and “How to win friends and influence people” by Dale Carnegie.
The E-myth taught me that there are many parts to building a business, that businesses require structure and various roles that need to be fulfilled in order the “machine” to operate. It also taught me about being an entrepreneur is not glamourous and most people fail, because it’s more than just selling products.
How to win friends and influence people taught me how to be attentive and pay attention to what people say, even without saying it. This in priceless in business and life, people want to know that you are genuine about caring, people love to be paid attention to, recognized, and heard and if you are able to service their needs and wants by simply paying attention you will be successful at building lasting fruitful relationships.
