We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emmie Sellers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emmie below.
Emmie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I am very happy as a business owner! I enjoy the flexibility it brings as well the control I have over what I feel is best for my business! There are times when I do think having a regular job would be nice, but that’s because I have a very hard time setting work hours for myself! In my busy seasons, I tend to work all through the day and into the night on my photography just to keep me from getting behind. I place these expectations on myself and just can’t seem to walk away from it by a certain time of day! With a regular job, I could do that! I could leave the workplace and not bring it home with me! I’ve done it with the other jobs I’ve had in the past. It was nice! The pressure was less on me as well as the stress, but I also know what it’s like to be tied down to a job without flexibility in my hours as well as the limitations you have on making decisions for the business you work for. I would have to say that being my own boss far outweighs the perks of having a nine-to-five job!

Emmie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My love for photography really started after I had my first child. It was actually through a friend of mine who was also a photographer and who actually took photos of my first child when she was little that I began to have a passion for photography. She guided me along the way and gave me great advice and encouragement! I started out taking pictures for friends and family, and then as word spread about my work, my clientele increased. My business mainly thrives off of word of mouth. Which is the best free advertisement you can get! There definitely have been challenges along the way, but those challenges have only sharpened me and helped me grow and learn what works and what doesn’t work for the health of my business! I would say that what I hear most from my clients that probably set me apart would be that I keep my images real and natural, without all the over-editing that some images can have. I’m also told I make my clients feel very comfortable during their sessions and make it fun as well! What others might want to know about me is that I’m a follower of Christ; I’m a wife; mother of two beautiful daughters; I love to sing and particularly harmonize; I’m from Savannah, GA; I graduated from Auburn University and was part of the AU Singers show choir; One of my images was used full screen in the movie “We Bought A Zoo”; I love to dance, hike, travel and eat; I can’t eat gluten and dairy; I would love to eventually open up a gluten and dairy free bakery; I love 80’s music (nothing better); I run for exercise; I have two Bernedoodles, Remi and Ollie.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
As a photographer, I depend on my clients to help spread the word about my work and the quality of my images! With that said, I believe they have done a great job in getting my name out there to their friends and families in order for me to build a solid reputation in my area!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect is being able to capture in my images the personalities of my individual clients as well as show the emotional connection/relationship my families share!
