We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jesica Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jesica, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents did a lot of things right, even though I haven’t always realized that. They are both interested & curious about living a holistic lifestyle and they exposed me to that in my teenage years as they began to uncover some paradigm shifts.
The most impactful thing they’ve ever cemented in me, though, is the Joseph Campbell quote. “Follow your bliss.” To add to that, they have always supported me in quitting high-stress jobs where I was underappreciated, under-compensated, and unhappy.
This has always helped me felt free, supported, and like I have a clear direction.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jesica Williams (formerly Cockerham), and I’ve been a lifelong athlete and collegiate volleyball player. I describe myself as an NCAA athlete turned health nut. Through rigorous training demands, I became interested in nutrition in my teenage years to best fuel my athletic performance. Alongside that, I was struggling with cystic acne and became increasingly interested in skincare ingredients, hormones, etc.
These interests birthed my blog in 2012, originally called “Run On Organic”, where I focused on organic skincare, organic food, and how to live a healthy lifestyle.
Over the years, a rebrand felt authentic, as I wanted to cover more components of my lifestyle like intuitive exercise, self peace (my version of body positivity), making your own rules in life, and against-the-grain holistic health modalities.
My business is in an expansive period right now in which I am working with a developer to launch a new website, and have also been beginning to expand my offerings into wellness consultations.
The majority of my work is with brands in the partnership/affiliate realm.
I help my community to feel empowered and in-the-know with ingredients, non-toxic skin and nutrition options. My aim is to assist them in navigating unlearning years of teachings in regards to the standard American diet, common toxic ingredients that are allowed in skincare, etc.
I’m most proud of my unwavering commitment to authenticity. I don’t advocate for things I don’t truly believe in and haven’t experienced for myself.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have always believed that being yourself is the best way to grow a genuine community. Remember that there are humans on the other side of the phone, and talk/share like you would with a friend.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One exercise or nutrition regime is not going to work for every person. For example, extensive research has been released in the last 5 years that backs up intermittent fasting. However, what many don’t realize is that the majority of these studies are done on men. Thus, this is perhaps not the most hormonally supportive for women. That’s certainly been the case for me.
