We were lucky to catch up with DaVinci Kitsune recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, DaVinci thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
i mean, anytime you step into the public with a piece of art it’s always going to be up for interpretation. I think the biggest thing i faced was, people not understanding why i chose to rap AND sing. It’s like “yeah i can rap but what’s the fun in ONLY doing that.” I know we can’t please everybody but sometimes it feels like people don’t want artists to grow creatively. There also seems to be this thing where people wants artists to be vulnerable and pour out our deepest pains into our art. Me personally im not interested in doing that and it’s asking alot of an artist when you ask them to do that some of those feelings and emotions are still raw and unresolved, I’m much more interested in telling stories than i am diving into my childhood trauma on a song, haha.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
i think my story of how i got into creating music isn’t as interesting as some others haha. i didn’t take music seriously at first i was too young maybe 13 or so. but later i really was just trying be like my good friend Masuta he’s always been like a big brother to me ever since we met and every little brother wants to be like the big brother. i got into photography because i’ve always had an eye for beauty and photos and are a form of expression that calls for very little talking. Both arts can be collaborative and thats one of my favorite things about them, so if you want a verse or a photoshoot just DM or text me, im always down to work with other artists. I actually was nominated for best collaboration at last years SC Upstate Music Awards along with my good friend $WVNK for our song ‘Divine’ That was a proud moment we didn’t win but that’s ok. awards are just validation of what you already know or think about yourself.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Honestly, just show up. If you really enjoy a smaller artist and their work, show up for shows, buy the merch, stream everything they drop. The same way we do for the superstars. Never discount an artist because they aren’t “successful” because success is self determined.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
just understand that aside from being an artist im a person and a father as well. so if it feels like i haven’t released any new music in a while, just understand im probably busy doing the same things you do everyday because im not famous yet.
