We were lucky to catch up with Josiah Holwick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Josiah, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
“Life shrinks and expands on the proportion of your willingness to take risks and try new things.” – Gary Vaynerchuk
Creative endeavors are by their nature are uncertain. Starting a freelance business carries substantial risk; however, embracing the inherent stress of fluctuating income pays dividends. It is the price you pay for opportunity, providing you freedom of a flexible lifestyle where you are in control over your own outcome. A critical component in keeping your sanity is to understand how much risk you are willing and able to absorb.
“No worthwhile life can be lived without risks. There will be disappointments and failures and disasters as a result of taking these risks. But, in the long run, it will work out.” – Alan Watts

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My wife, Julia and I started Proper Films, a video production team that specializes in filming and editing high energy videos that tell elevated stories of brands and destinations. Videos are the quickest way to tell a story and best avenue to share your imagination. I first picked up a camera 18 years ago and have since filmed in some of the most far-reaching, exotic places around the world. Searching for bengal tigers in India, adventure travels in Patagonia, and my most rewarding excursion, sailing to Antarctica on a 100 year old sailboat. Visit our blog to see all the videos from that voyage.

How’d you meet your business partner?
Despite the connotation, self-employment is an impossible feat to do alone. Regardless whether you are working alongside a co-worker or with a client, “self-employment” is a team effort. The success of Proper Films is attributed to our complimenting skill set and knowing how each of our roles play into the bigger picture. We met at Filmschool in Denver 10 years ago, we help each other stay organized on the day to day tasks, such as finances and project communications while staying on the same page of the grander vision.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Networking is critical, be involved socially, and reach out to those in the industry – both online & in person – to create genuine interactions. This helps pave the way for opportunities to work alongside people you trust and enjoy being around. Be open to new experiences, get outside your comfort zone, and embrace the unknown. First and foremost, follow a niche you are passionate about.
