We recently connected with Dalvion Fields and have shared our conversation below.
Dalvion, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Not every project or every show is successful so yes I’ve had the thought many times, because being a professional creative is not an easy path and there a plenty of ups and downs, but then I think how I’d be even worse off just working a more ordinary job. I’d be worse off because It’s simply not what makes me the happiest. When you’ve found your path that makes your life brighter everyday, and feels meant for you, then It’s worth pursuing! There’s so much to celebrate when you get to the ‘ups’ and so much to learn from the ‘downs’ too, but most importantly do the things you enjoy!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Dalvion, but I’m known artistically as King Indigo. I’m a designer and visual artist based in Houston! My style is described as mysterious, colorful, surreal and maybe even a little goofy haha. I usually love straddling the line between cute and dark aesthetics. I’m primary a digital artist and painter but I’m exploring new mediums and art forms currently! I think about functionality a lot, so I’ve made different types of merch as well.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Interestingly enough, I’ve been to places like Austin, Seattle, and Oregon where local artists have storefronts and the cities are dotted with artwork and sculptures. Houston already has a large hub for creatives and artisans, and there’s a lot of representation but I think there’s needs to be even more support and funding for the creatives and less on the industrial side. Image how much more beauty, vibrancy and culture we could bring out and showcase in the world if we embraced artistic influence and creativity the way we do other industry and capital.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to start more conversations about mental health and change the way we interact with the natural world around us. Looking more deeply into both and taking them seriously has changed my life. Emotionally healthier people make for a healthier world. I also actively want to make sure I’m having fun, because that’s important too and I hope that it always translates in my work!
