We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Esther Adams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Esther, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Something I think my parents did right was equipped me with the right tools to maneuver through life. Growing up my family and I lived in a little village in the country of Guyana where we faced many struggles. The first thing my mom taught us was to have faith in God. She explained that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. I think having this insight has been vitally essential to my life and career. Overall, what my parents did was provide an environment for my siblings and I to dream, to have hope, and the courage to pursue what seems like the impossible.
Esther, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi my name is Esther Adams and I am an entrepreneur located in San Diego CA. I own a fashion brand known as Divine Legacy , which was established in 2014. The idea was birthed after I was crowned miss unique at my high school prom, for the gowns my mom and I had designed 2 days before. From there I shared my recognition with my mentor Charles Thompson , who immediately decided he would sponsor my very first show. Since then, Divine Legacy managed to put together multiple successful shows and create a platform that helps to promote and market various talents , local vendors and other Fashion Designers . Our shows showcase original handmade designs. features up and coming artists, models, choreographers, dancers, and other live performers. Putting together these events have helped build hope, faith and confidence in young people within our community and our dream is to share this with the world.
Our message is simple, we believe in being good stewards to our God-given gifts, talent and abilities. Fashion is the attraction of our business, but first and foremost, we aim to inspire. By working together, we are becoming the change we would like to see.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2015, I dropped out of college and moved across the country to San Diego, California. I had nothing but the clothes off my back and an unshakable faith that I was meant to be here. As I reflect back on my experience, I realized that this was a pivotal moment in my career, business, and life, as it was one of adaptation, perseverance, and resilience. As I became acclaimed to my new home, I started to envision the new opportunity that this life could offer. As I departed from the student athlete lifestyle, I entered the workforce. While the general workforce provided me stability, I realized that I wanted more for myself. This required me to look inward, and own on the skills and leadership like qualities i had developed thus far. It wasn’t until then I gained the confidence to move forward in my career aspirations as a business owner.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Throughout my experience, I have realized that my authenticity has given me an advantage when connecting and networking with others. I strive to create a reputable brand that values faith, talent, and individuality. It is my authentic leadership style that has fueled these values in the variety of work settings and relationships.
