We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tonya Hutchings. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tonya below.
Tonya, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
One of the most underserved sectors of the business community is small business or “Mom & Pop” organizations. They struggle with technological training, Marketing and Advertising, Staffing, Funding and trying to stay relevant in these rapidly changing times. Many of them are treading water trying to keep their businesses alive daily. Please don’t ask them about their “back office”, no bookkeeping, organization, systems or processes. They are just trying to keep the doors of their businesses open. These businesses can’t compete with new start ups or don’t qualify for grants and funding because they have a skill or vocation but little to no knowledge of how to run a legitimate business.
My passion is to see these business owners beaming with pride as they gain clarity to their vision, the pressure of surviving business is relieved and they begin to see growth and experience success.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a single mother I have had many jobs, in many different fields. I’ve been a receptionist, property manager, leasing agent, secretary, as well as a number of manual labor positions. Because of the enormous responsibility of having a large number of children, I was fired from better jobs than some people retire from. One day, I sat down and made a list of all the skills I have acquired over the years. Most of them where administrative in nature and I realized I was good at making others look good. I was gifted to see a situation and create the process or steps to bring a solution quickly. It was easy for me to streamline processes and solve problems. I loved working in the background and making others look professional and I loved the underdog! I loved to see a small business appear like a multi-million dollar corporation. The joy of seeing a client relieved once we meet and they are able to see the light is what I live for. I think what I love the most about the process is that as we unravel the tangled areas of their business, we untangle other areas of their lives and create long-term relationships. Mom and Pop organizations now become viable businesses that are seen in the marketplace as a major competitors and they guy who can garden or cut grass is now a legitimate landscaper with a thriving, professional business structure.
Noteworthy Administrative Solutions provides administrative support to many of these business types. We first, diagnose problem areas in their business structure. We also devise clear cut strategies to get the back office in order and set up systems, structures & policies to help them run their businesses more efficiently. We also offer staff, technology and customer service training. Finally, we offer services to assist them with day to day operations such as data entry, bookkeeping tasks, answering and returning calls, creating forms and documents and a wide assortment of administrative tasks.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
This is not my first go go-round with Noteworthy. In 2009, I started Noteworthy Business Solutions in the back seat of my car spending hours riding around with my ex-husband while he worked his janitorial service. I watched him struggle to handle billing, customer service, HR, bookkeeping all while doing the cleaning. I thought to myself, there has to be a way I can help streamline all this. I looked at all my skill s and starting helping him by becoming his back office. This lasted many years as I developed strategies, processes and learned how to market and package all the years of training I received. In 2012 I went through a divorce and Noteworthy took a backseat to life. Finding myself a single parent again, I couldn’t find a job that fit my demanding, parenting schedule.
In 2016 I picked Noteworthy up again and finetuned my vision from the broad topic of business to administrative and training services. Since then I have helped countless small businesses become the business they dreamed of.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe word of mouth has been my best marketing tool. It’s easy to put out a flyer or boost a post on social media that gives viewers a polished view of your business, but when you help someone not only keep their business afloat but help it succeed, they are excited to share with others how you have helped. I love to receive calls from new clients who were referred by someone I’ve helped. Also, a reputation of excellence helps. It’s important to keep your word, treat every client like your most important one, always have a professional presentation and STAY READY FOR ANYTHING! Stand out from the crowd with a service you offer that makes you more desirable.
