We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kia Black a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kia, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’m currently working on multiple projects that are all made from recycled fibers. Textile waste occupies nearly 5% of all landfill space. I use yarn scraps, ribbons, and fabric to create new yarn that myself and other artists use to create new works of art. Most people typically use the yarn in weavings or knitting. I have also been using old clothing that no longer can be worn due to holes, rips, or stains and using those materials as fabric in sewing projects. My newest creation is making my own fabric from yarn scraps.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a stay at home mom who crafts for self care. Love my family, but I also love the fiber arts. I enjoy weaving, macrame, sewing, and spinning yarn. I create one of a kind pieces of art work for people and teach workshops for other people to learn how to create the basics. The workshops I teach are how to create pom pom and tassel keychains, beginner weaving, and intermediate weaving classes.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think some things we can do as a society to support artists and creatives to share what they make on social media and to our friends and family. It gives the artists encouragement to keep creating. Of course if you’re able to, please purchase from the people who’s work you admire.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love seeing my work in people’s homes or when they wear something I create. With the yarn I create, when other artists purchase that yarn to use in a piece they’re making it makes me feel supported 2 fold. It is so gratifying to know that you created something they love.
