We were lucky to catch up with Takisha Bromell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Takisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
When I was first venturing out to start a business, my intention was to solely partner with real estate agents. I knew I needed some guidance to get the ball rolling, so I reached out to various friends and colleagues that were also business owners. Many were very successful and ran million-dollar companies, so leaning into them for wisdom and advice was high on my to-do list! As I walked in to meet with each individual, I expected to hear that my idea was not profitable but, to my amazement, each person not only encouraged me but gave me great advice on how to move forward! As I left each office, I felt as if I were collecting pieces of a puzzle and the big picture was all coming together! One of the last places I visited was with a former employer where I had served as his C.O.O. As I was speaking with him, he turned to his assistant and asked her, “What do you think? Would you like to have your own GirlFriday?” I had never heard of the term or expression before, so I inquired! “What is a GirlFriday??” He explained it was the name of an old movie, as well as a term used to describe a secretary. I just knew at that moment that I had found the last piece of the puzzle! I went home and looked up its definition: “A female office assistant entrusted with a wide variety of tasks.” BOOM! And there it was! GirlFriday Business Solutions was born!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
To say there have been some bumps and close calls along the way is an understatement! I vividly remember sitting on my couch in 2019 completely exhausted and just feeling at the end of my rope. I was seriously considering calling it quits with my business and just closing shop.
I think most business owners can relate to that moment, a time where you need to reflect and evaluate and ask yourself, “Am I going to make it?” Fortunately, I pressed forward and 2020 ended up being my best year! I am happy to share that 2021 was even better, and 2022 has already passed the projected growth. The reality is – struggles are real for business owners and entrepreneurs, but if you can hang on and learn from your mistakes and pivot when needed, the reward is worth it!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Business owners will hit many crossroads that require one to pivot but, in my experience, this is most true when growing! They are called “growing pains” for a reason! For example, the month of July was a bear! I was not feeling well; I felt stressed, and it was affecting my body (affecting everything actually). We started to work on our processes, hire new team members, and expand in so many ways. It felt like a juggling act at times and trying to balance it all was A LOT.
I was wondering if the “wheels were coming off” and was grappling with how to handle it, so I took some time to look at GirlFriday’s numbers. I needed to see where we were and get more insight on how to move forward. And then it happened! I realized we had more revenue in the last 7 months than we had from all of 2021! We were on pace to (almost) double what we had made the prior year!
It wasn’t until I looked at everything as a whole (January to July) that my eyes were opened to what was really happening in my business. WOWSER! The wheels were not falling off – we were experiencing growing pains.
I immediately started reading, No Man’s Land, and it discussed what to do when you are too small to be big and too big to be small. It helped me understand where my company was and how to handle its growth! My leadership team and I are now positioning ourselves for what’s to come and can’t wait to keep leveling up!
