We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcus Amaker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcus below.
Marcus, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
One of the kindest gifts I ever received happened in honor of a student who passed away unexpectedly. I led this student in a poetry workshop in 2019 – she was curious and vibrant, and was impacted by the writing, sharing, and vulnerability that happens in a workshop.
Last year, I found out that the student was in a car accident and died. She was only 14 years old. I wrote a poem for her funeral, and her family made a custom journal for me. It instantly made me cry. The custom journal’s artwork referenced the poem I wrote.
That journal is sacred to me, and I’m honored to witness true generosity and love. Especially in a time that could be challenging for a family.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Marcus Amaker, a dad and husband. I am a graphic designer, musician and the first Poet Laureate of Charleston, SC. As a graphic designer, I design a national music magazine (No Depression) and posters for various artists and nonprofits. As a musician, I make electronic music user the alias “tape loop.” And as a poet, I write and publish work for myself others. I also visit a lot of schools to do poetry workshops. I’ve published nine books so far, and have created more than 35 albums of music.
I’m most proud of being able to publish poems for students and others. I started a publishing company, Free Verse, to make all of that happen.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the connection that art can make with others. Art is magic, and reminds us that we are more alike than we are different. Music brings us together. Poetry brings us together. Anything that is working for our common good is good with me.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The music and business of Ani DiFranco is extra inspiring to me. I also love the work of P. Scott Cunningham and O, Miami.
