We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Patricia Howard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Patricia below.
Alright, Patricia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I would have to say it was when I was around 39 and realized I was a songwriter. As far as I could remember, I’ve always loved music and loved to sing. I come from a big family of singers and musicians. My biggest enemy when I was young was my shyness and fear of singing in front of others. So, I was a shower singer until I got old enough to get bold enough to sing in front of a crowd. My first time was singing karaoke at a restaurant/bar in my early 20’s. My friends encouraged me to go for it, so I did. I sang an Anita Baker song and I was blown away by the applause and cheers that I received that I knew I wanted to do this for life. When I gave my life to Christ at the age of 33, I began singing for my church and became the praise and worship leader. Fast forward to 39, I was dating my now husband and he is a guitar/bass player. We were sitting around his place and he started playing a tune on the guitar. I sat there and started singing and I wrote a song on the spot. I titled the song “Everyday” and it was so fresh and everyone that heard it, loved it. This was when I knew what I wanted to do. I love writing and I love singing and to be able to do both is so rewarding. I always worked as an administrative assistant but my heart wasn’t in it. It was just a job to pay my bills. Being a creative, I wanted so much more out of my life. At the age of 47, I released my first gospel CD project, which I named “Everyday” featuring the first song I ever wrote. During that time, I also began writing stage plays and musicals. My writing ability began to evolve and expand into newer realms. I wrote several plays, which then lead to my writing my autobiography and self-publishing in 2021. The book is selling well on Amazon and my plan is to make it a movie one day. I wrote a song and posted on social media in 2020 and it went viral. I released the single of the song in 2020 as a tribute to George Floyd. I’ve written several songs since then and I am now in the process of releasing one single at a time. I am currently still working at a college here in Tampa, but I am on a path to pursue a full-time career as a recording artist and author. In August 2022, I released a single called “I Can’t Wait” and it is selling on all streaming platforms. I have another single that will be released in October 2022.
Patricia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, the youngest daughter of eight children of Pastor Roosevelt and Evangelist Mae Ida Amos, both deceased. I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior on July 24, 1999 and have been chasing after Him ever since.
I am an ordained minister as well as a psalmist, recording artist, author and playwright. I currently reside in Tampa, Florida.
I have written, directed and produced over 10 plays and stage productions. In 2005, I was privileged to go into the mission field of India, where I ministered in word and in song to thousands. I received my Associate’s Degree in Christian Ministry in 2011 and a Bachelor’s Degree in Substance Abuse Counseling at Ohio Christian University in 2015.
I’ve been happily married to my husband, Larry Howard for 17 years and have a combined family of 4 adult children and 4 grandchildren. We have also been foster parents to over 20 children over the years. My worship is refreshing and anointed.
I published my loose autobiography titled “THE WAGES” in 2021. My album “EVERYDAY”, single “I CAN’T WAIT”, and book “THE WAGES” are available on Amazon, Spotify, Apple Music and all streaming platforms. I will be going on another mission trip to Thailand in September 2022, where I will be able to minister in song to many as well as teach and train in the art of worship.
My heart’s desire is to bring glory to God and to exalt His name through song for the rest of my life and in heaven. I also endeavor to continue releasing music, producing plays and authoring books for the rest of my life. I desire to raise up artistic centers in my city and across the nation that provide a safe space for youth to create.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish in my earlier days that we had such online resources and platforms as we do now. I wish we had self-publishing options such as Amazon and social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, etc. I wish we had streaming platforms like Apple Music, Spotify and others when I was first coming into the industry as an artist. I think making it in the industry as an artist of any kind is much easier now than it was when I was younger.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is creating. When you create, whether it’s a song, a book, a drawing, a painting, or a movie, it’s like your baby. It all came from you. Even though you may have been inspired by someone or something, it came from you. God is a creator, and He made us in His image. So, as a creator, I take pride in every song or literary work that I’ve created. It is such a joy to see the process through from start to finish and It is so rewarding to see others enjoy your work and love it as much as you do.
