We recently connected with Megan Besler and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan , thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

My small business is called Moon Water Apothecary. I had a business so many years ago that went viral, and after shutting those doors during a not fun divorce, I took a few years off and went into the corporate world.
Earlier this year I started making my own candles and incense oils, and I had so many people telling my just how good our house always smelled.
I started really getting into energy work in the past year or two, to help heal my own demons from my past abusive marriage, and childhood trauma, and I turned to meditation and energy work to help.
I started becoming very “in-tune” with the moon, and the moon phases, and really started noticing a lot of positive energy coming from this.
What set it in stone for me, was having people over and over tell me that I had a gift I wasn’t using, and that “gift” needed to be shared with others. I couldn’t figure out what that meant until I realized how this certain energy work was helping me.
I then wanted to share that with the world.
I then put a business plan into action, and started making reed diffusers for your home, with real essential oils and moon water from every full moon! With the mindset of harvesting the full moon energy, and dispersing it through your own homes for good cleansing and karma.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Back in 2017, I created a start up company that ended up somehow going viral. Unfortunately I ended up going through an incredibly hard divorce and was eventually forced to shut the company down. I was going through a major burnout during this time period with running a successful business bringing in half a million dollars in revenue during the first year, on top of working another job on the side managing a team of over 1000 people.

Burnout is an understatement.
I said I’d never open up another business because of how much it truly killed me and my mental health.
It’s taken this long to even remotely start thinking about another business, let alone open one.
They say it takes a person 5-7 years typically to recover from a burnout.
It took me 6 and it was rough.

But life has gotten so much better since that viral business back in 2017.
I’ve gotten remarried to the absolute love of my life, I have a support system that finally follows me for the right reasons, I wrote and published my very own memoir, we purchased our dream home last year, and my mental health has gotten so much better!
I’ve also gone through a huge spiritual awakening which has been incredibly eye opening and humbling to say the least.

Through this long ride, I recently started going back to my roots with having far too many hobbies for even myself to count. (It helps me wind down from work everyday.)
Part of going back to my roots was digging out some old essential oils.
In 2011 I went to school to become an esthetician. I attended an Aveda Institute in Milwaukee, WI, where I was introduced to a more holistic approach to skincare versus the normal traditional route.

While at the Aveda Institute, I took a class from one of Aveda’s “noses” and learned how to concoct the perfect scent.
I don’t know why at the time, but this class was so appealing to me that I went home and purchased far too many oils and starting making candles, perfumes, the whole works, just for myself as a hobby.

Now here we are, years later, and because of my healing journey, I’ve gotten back into meditating, incense, and essential oils.
I started making candles and diffusers about a year ago as a hobby because I’m cheap and it helped take my mind off my stress filled job at the end of the day.
With this, people starting getting interested in what I was doing, and how they were made. And after the constant “your house smells so good!” comments, and the literal HATRED I have for working in corporate America, I decided to dive back into a business.

So here we are folks!

I will eventually be offering a variety of products that will come in years to come . Incense sticks, hand designed tarot cards, crystals, diffusers, etc!
or at least, that’s the plan!
But for right now, I’m so incredibly excited about the first product launch, which is my personal favorite!

With this business, I would love to eventually quit my corporate job and focus on my mental health. And I do truly hope one day this will allow that for me!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

Take time for yourself . MAKE time for yourself.

If you are tired one day, take a break. Your orders can wait. People can wait. YOU CAN WAIT.
Your health and mental sanity need a break every now and again, and it is OK to take that break.

With my previous viral business, I never took those breaks and I ended up paying for it years later through a very hard 6 year burnout.

Any fun sales or marketing stories?

I actually do not have any degrees in marketing , however I find myself to be incredibly good at it on social media platforms.

I have marketed myself and my own businesses solely on social media and capitalizing on what is trendy via those social media platforms. I took advantage of LIVE fb shows when they were trendy, and I am capitalizing on the TikTok platform as we speak and it’s done incredibly well for my business.

I have found weird loopholes around social media algrythms, and I truly think outside the box.

I grew my business following to over 50,000 people in a matter of a month, which ended up creating $500,000 in revenue within the first 6 months of being open.

I sold $75,000 in copies of my personal memoir just by marketing myself on social media alone.
