We were lucky to catch up with Daisha Morris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Daisha, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Hello Rebels! My name is Daisha and i am a master hairstylist. From natural hair services, to extensions, and now wigs. I have created my own lane in the hair industry. I graduated hair school back in 2015 and took off on my own ever since. The journey of being your own boss has its perks and also has its downfalls. By the time i left hair school i had enough clientele to uphold booth rent.
I gained clients from word of mouth, just around the city of Memphis. Then my social media presence allowed me to showcase my talents even more over the internet for thousands to see. Let’s just say Gods vision for me was way bigger then what i saw! It felt like my instagram followers grew overnight. Thousands of likes, follows and website traffic blew me away in such little time. Celebrities stared reaching out, news anchors and even schools where calling for me to come speak to the upcoming cosmetologist about how you can be young and successful in my field.
After having my first child my business of wig making took off! I couldn’t keep up with all my other services so I decided to come from behind the chair and work strictly on wig. I had to find a quicker way to make the wigs and ship them out in a timely manner because hand stitching all those orders alone was definitely a task I wasn’t prepared for. So i deceived to take a sewing class on how to make wigs with a sewing machine.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
In 2017 i bought my first sewing machine. Yes thats right, I was 20 years old learning how to use a sewing machine to speed up my craft. At first, the thought of using one was scary because we all know that sewing machines where usually a hobby for our grandparents. I took the class and became a pro by the next week! Flying through my online orders of wig making and also the orders that came through the salon. I was tackling all of them on my Singer Tradition Sewing machine. Purchasing that machine was the best $100 i ever spent.
Staying consistent, focused and determined got me to where i am today. I am blessed to say that i have helped over 400 ladies make wigs on the sewing machine. From big group classes, 1 on 1s and even doing tours around the states to teach women in the hair industry how to make a wig has been the best feeling ever.
Now throughout the years when I first stared i knew it wasn’t going to be easy and its been times where i had to go get 9-5 jobs until i was stable enough to do hair only. But I never gave up. I knew i wouldn’t have orders and clients all the time. That’s apart of being a entrepreneur and thats what come with being your own boss and making your own products, services and schedules. You will know when its all worth it. Whatever your passionate about is not a job. If you can wake up and do the same thing over and over and never get tired or bored, that’s your money maker. I never get tired of shampooing hair. I love the smell of a salon, i love wearing an apron and having clips everywhere! My career isn’t a job its my life.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media plays a major part in my business. My social media supporters have grew tremendously over the yers. From hashtags to paid promotions all you have to do to keep your following base growing, is to stay relevant. Posting consistently and staying trendy will allow you to keep floating through an audience that likes similar things you post!
Here are a few things you can think about when you are ready to grow your brand on Instagram:
*Use hashtags on all your post and videos. Use tags that are always trending like #explore #fyp #trending Even hashtags that are relatable to your posting. If its a hair post, include hashtags like #wig #lacefronts #curlywig #redhair You also want a location so when people are looking to book or shop in that city they can find your work. For instance #memphisstylist #houstonbraider #atlwigmaker
*Paid promotions are the best when it comes reaching potential clients or customers based off your area and or searching for the items you may provide. Your able to adjust so many options on paid promotions on Facebook and instagram. Adding the location, how many people you want it to reach and how long you want the ad to run will most likely give you the results you are looking for.
*Free/discounted promo is another way of getting followers. If you choose the right influencer that can show your product off by making videos or taking pictures, as long as they have the same audience as you, there following can potentially gravitate to becoming your followers as well. If you are selling skincare products, I wouldn’t reach out to someone who post allot of food content. Their following base isn’t interested in that type of content/advertising.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Nice, clean, quality work and products is what catches my target audience. I continue to have the same background if possible so my followers know my work and background area just from seeing it constantly over and over again. I chose to be the face of my brand when it comes to professional pictures and photo shoots. I enjoy taking my on hair pictures and letting everyone know who is the women behind this hair brand. Not everyone wants to run their business like that though. It’s totally up to you on how you want to showcase your brand! Your business marketing should be unique! Let’s leave the audience with something to remember!
