We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tatiana Alvarez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tatiana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
In the publishing industry today, we are seeing a big shift when it comes to traditional and indie publishing. Before you could really only reach book success if you went the traditional route, meaning you would need to query your book and hope and agent found you. Then you would hope that your agent could see your book. Now the indie publishing scene is taking the publishing world by storm. There are so many amazing avenues to get your book out in the world without going through a big publisher who typically don’t cater to BIPOC creators.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Tatiana Alvarez and I’m currently a full time author and social media influencer for authors. I published my first book The Ambrosia Throne and have two more books in the work. My love for reading started at a young age and I was always found with a book in my hand. When I joined social media as an adult, I got to discover new authors that i have never heard of because they did not go the traditional route. These books were amazing and me, along with a group of seven other women, wanted to provide a platform for indie authors so we started the Book Tour Gals. The Tour Gals believe Indie authors and traditionally published authors deserve the same quality promotion for their works. This is why we offer our multi-year experience as content creators to help authors reach new readers across multiple platforms with tailored tours befitting their marketing needs. Unlike other tour companies, Book Tour Gals is not an intermediary between the author and the content creators. We establish a direct relationship with our authors and guarantee a professional and friendly experience.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
On instagram there is a certain niche known as “bookstagram.” Bookstagram provides so many readers, authors, and content creators. It truly feels like a community where you can simply gush about all the best books and your favorite authors. My cofounder found me by what content I was putting out. The photos I was taking for bookstragram surrounded indie authors. My cofounders wanted to create a marketing team for indie authors and needed more people who enjoyed books that weren’t traditionally published. From Instagram DMs to zoom calls, we finally found the women that would represent the Book Tour Gals company.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Communication. Everyone says communication is key and that ends up sounding like a cliche if you do not put it into practice. You must communicate with your team often. If the only kind of communication is negative, that does not boost moral. We often forget to comment on the positive and need to make sure we uplift our wonderful content creators and make sure their needs are meant.
