We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cookie B. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cookie below.
Hi Cookie, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I am still working towards making a full time living from my creative endeavors, this being revenues that are enough to operate as a business as well as pay myself a decent amount from this one realm of work. I have 2 businesses on top of my artistry, so wages from each mixed together gets me to a place of security, but my goal is to be funded by one or two only. I went full time in January 2022 by jumping the cliff from a steady 9-5. It’s been a wonderful journey of learning and discovery. It has really been fun putting a rhythm together to produce growth and excellence. The most major thing that has happened was getting over the hump of assessing what did and didn’t work, and stepping into the clarity of a vision I have been piecing together since I was 15 years old. I couldn’t have asked things to flow a better way.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started spoken word in college. It was something that was gifted to me after praying for the ability to talk and communicate with others. With this, outside of featuring as an artist in creative space and themed conferences, I provide confrontational messages that provoke heart change towards God’s truth in order to get people closer to the best parts of themselves. I’ve featured on rap albums, at birthday parties, church services, funerals, workshops, community events, and fundraising programs providing custom poems to communicate messages that draw the attention of their audience to the subject of the day. I am most proud of my ability to connect with individuals and teams in ways that make them feel seen and encouraged.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the main things I had to unlearn was that I (my feelings, thoughts, perspectives) did not matter. Growing up and coming from a family of divorce, my feelings, thoughts, and expressions weren’t considered in a lot of what my life was by those who were closest to me. This caused me to cling to a lie that they and moreso I didn’t matter. I grew willing to tolerate the worst, just considering myself unworthy of anything good. It was easy for me to build up and treat others with worth, but it was not something I believed applied to me. I eventually recognized the lie after evaluating a cycle of a toxic relationship and got the unpacking to heal to remove the hindrance it was putting over my life.. I’ve learned I am worthy of so much and have been able to taste the fruit that comes with me being all I am created to be.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, one it’s fueled as a method of communicating the Gospel and God’s truth on all subjects and matters in ways. The second is in alignment with how that fuels me to see myself the way God sees me to be my best self in this world. Last, the way these things bless and are able to provoke change in the hearts of others.
