We recently connected with Keshawna Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Keshawna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
My entire life I’ve been met with obstacles. Throughout that time dance has always been my outlet. In 2019, when I lost my brother and closet friend, I found comfort in my grieving process by actually dancing for him at his funeral service. He was one of my biggest creative supporters, and that’s what has pushed me to always create through motion. While carrying the burden of not having my brother, my father left this earth suddenly in January of 2022. Needless to say, this shook my world. Knowing that my father was a creative himself, giving up dance was never an option. Some days are harder than others, but I can truly say I gain strength in the acknowledgment of the people and things that I’ve lost. I must stay in motion. It’s my life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hello readers, here’s a little about me, I was born Keshawna Robinson, but my stage persona is KeeTheDon. I am a 25 year old Atlanta native who’s life goal is to always stay in motion. Dance did not come to me naturally, or so I thought. Seemingly it all started at a school dance when I was 8 years old. Unbeknownst to my family or teachers, that would be where my life began. From that year I’ve been trained in various dance genres including but not limited to tap, hip-hop, African Rhythm dancing, and Jazz. I have been fortunate to train and perform in amazing spaces for amazing people. At 8, I performed in New York, for Showtime at the Apollo. This was the beginning of everything. I have performed with the likes of artists Big Latto, Canton Jones, Young LA, Tedashii, John P Kee, Fred Hammond and many more. My training has always been dear to me. I believe training and exercising your craft regularly is key to longevity in this industry. Although some things come to us naturally, it’s always a great idea to have a community or space where you can hone in on your skills and sharpen your talents.
It is my desire to never stop learning, working, or collaborating with others through dance. I am open for bookings, choreography consultations, and collaborations with other dance artists. If dance has taught me anything, it’s taught me that there is beauty in community. I’m thankful for every artist, teacher, teammate, and family member that have gotten me to this point.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
It has always been my dream to own and operate a school of dance for the less fortunate. As I came up in dance, I noticed the sacrifices my grandmother made for me to participate in trips and outings with my team. That’s when I made up in my mind, that when I could give back, I would, without hesitation. My school of dance will be named after my late brother and dedicated to those I love. While teaching the students dance, I also want to be able to be a safe place for each child that I encounter. Dance has always been my safe haven and I only hope to be that for others through dance.

How did you build your audience on social media?
In 2020, when the pandemic shut us all down. I not only lost employment, but I lost access to my safe space. My dance academy closed indefinitely and my team all went their separate ways. I couldn’t let that be the end. Much like a lot of people I discovered Tiktok during this time. I never stopped dancing for fun, but I hadn’t considered filming myself and sharing it with the world. That’s when it all clicked. It was never about money, followers, or clout. It was about that sense of community I was missing. The community the pandemic took away from us.
I started posting videos of myself dancing daily. Slowly but surely, I noticed people were actually watching. Over a course of 3 months my audience grew to over 10k followers. I kept dancing, stayed true to myself and now I have over 20k followers(and growing) who all feel like family to me.
My advice for anyone on the outside looking in, or even someone aspiring to be a content creator is to be yourself. I know it sounds cliche, but truly, there is an audience for everything! I believe we’re all assigned to our own journey and village. If you want to do this “social media thing” stay true to you. The people will come.
