We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alicia Franklin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alicia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Opening my salon was the biggest risk I have ever taken. Imagine no business experience, no business capital/credit and not sure if my clients were going to follow me to a new location. It was just on my heart to open a salon, I honestly felt I had what it took but nothing was in line with my vision. So here goes nothing….I tell my clients I’m opening a salon and thank goodness they are thrilled and excited for me! I secure my salon (it was a salon before) I didn’t have to do much besides by products. I literally was learning as I was going. Of course I’ve spent a lot of unnecessary money and made a lot of costly mistakes but it was all well worth it. I can honestly help aspiring salon owners avoid costly mistakes and to hire and or ask for help. I have been in the beauty industry for 20 years and owned Shear Glamor Salon for 11.
Alicia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Alicia Franklin I am a cosmetologist and owner of Shear Glamour Salon I reside in San Antonio .Texas. I am a hair extension specialist and specialize in healthy hair care. I actually love to transform my clients hair…. Rather it’s with a new style, hair extensions or a conditioning treatment. it makes my day when clients walk out with a smile on their face and they feel good about their appearance. For me feeling good about yourself it’s Glamour we all need an extra boost of some sort I just happen to specialize in the beauty portion. I give each one of my clients their own appointment therefore they get one on one time to speak freely and to know they have my undivided attention.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I have had to unlearn is that I can do everything myself. When you own a business you have to ask for help and hire help this will save a lot of time and headaches.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My biggest pivot in business has been due to Covid. I never imagined my salon being shut down. I literally would do FaceTime tutorials with some Of my clients who still had to work everyday. I was happy that I was able to educate them however that was a huge pivot.
