We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kathina Wood a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kathina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Ever since I was young, I’ve been interested in the arts; dancing, acting, drawing, baking, whatever form of art. I wanted to have a try. I danced at an old church I used to attend or danced on my own with a group of friends creating chirographies to hit songs. I would sit next to my mom at her desk while she would work on her designs, and I’d be right next to her designing my little garments too.
Going to art class was the only place I wanted to be. In elementary school, art class was my favorite class (besides going to lunch), and I loved it. I was always coloring, drawing, or doodling on pieces of paper. I still have an old drawing I did in Elementary school. I was also into baking, and I believe I started on an Easy Bake oven.
Photography was something that I embraced with such ease as well. A few photos on Instagram I actually took myself. I started modeling and acting at age 18, and I loved the craft and stuck with it. I felt as though God had engraved the arts into my veins. I can’t do anything that is not artistic because then I’d be bored.
Kathina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello! I am Kathina. I am a ray of sunshine with a contagious smile and an energetic and vibrant personality. I am also a commercial actor and creative. I had to go back to the origin (which is my mom) to ask where this passion for art came about. My mom said that I’ve always had an interest in art, in which she then reminded me why she bought me my first art box. “Ah yes! I said,” as I quickly remembered that wooden art box she gave me one Christmas as a present. My mom reminded me, as a kid, how I wanted to be a model when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up at school!
What type of products/services/creative works you provide
I am working on a new brand called paintings n pins. Paintings n pins are paintings that I’ve painted on a 5×7 canvas and will come with a miniature pin replica of the 5×7 image. I also do my self-shoot modeling and edit them for Instagram. I have done a few commercials such as Publix, Andy’s frozen custards, and NBA Experience (the NBA Experience shoot is on my Instagram). Some work I have done hasn’t been released to the media yet.
What you think sets you apart from others
What sets me apart from others is how I create my art. I view art differently. My way of viewing/creating art differs from how I form it! A lot of thinking process goes into my craft and how I can show others what I envision.
What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your brand/your work/ etc.
I am most proud that I have brands I can call my own, from being a commercial actor to creating my photo shoots to creating paintings n pins. These are my brands. I want my clients and followers to know that I am a dedicated working person who puts plans and motions and put my love and a lot of time into my work. I want dopamine to be released when they purchase my crafts or see modeling photos/watch commercials I’m featured in, and it causes them to smile. I want them to be blown away and feel my energy through my crafts.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that the ideas and creativity are endless. I could not run out of ideas, there are many ways to be creative and to stay creative, and you can share your craft with so many! I can create art in any of the forms out there, whatever I want it to be.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Other than the love of art! Yes, there is a goal driving my creative journey. It is to work for myself, continuing to create endlessly. I have many ideas I would like to try that are screaming for creation, but I can’t share these ideas with a company I work for because it is not their vision as much as it is mine.
