We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Syerra Lynn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Syerra Lynn below.
Dr. Syerra Lynn , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
One of the biggest risks I have ever taken was deciding to pursue my Doctor of Social Work degree while simultaneously building my career, operating businesses, and navigating significant personal challenges.
When I made the decision, it didn’t make sense on paper. I was already working in the mental health field, managing clients, building my private life , growing my culinary business, and trying to create opportunities that had never existed for me before. Financially, emotionally, and mentally, it was a major commitment. There were many moments when I questioned whether I was taking on too much.
What made the risk even greater was that I wasn’t pursuing the degree simply for a title. I wanted to develop something meaningful that could impact communities. Through my doctoral work, I created the Culinary Healing Model, which combines food, culture, storytelling, and mental health to promote healing and emotional wellness. It was an unconventional idea, and there was no guarantee people would understand or support it.
There were countless late nights, sacrifices, and moments of uncertainty. I had to learn how to balance multiple responsibilities while continuing to show up for my clients, my business, my family, and myself. Many people only see the accomplishments, but they don’t see the risk of investing years of work into a vision that may not succeed.
Looking back, that risk changed my life. Not only did I earn my doctorate, but I also gained confidence in my ability to create something original and meaningful. The experience taught me that growth often requires stepping into uncertainty before you have all the answers. Sometimes the greatest opportunities come from believing in a vision long before anyone else can see it.

Dr. Syerra Lynn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Dr. Syerra Lynn Donaldson, and I am a therapist, author, speaker, entrepreneur, and creator of the Culinary Healing Model. While many people know me as either “Chef Sy” or “Therapist Sy,” my life’s work has always centered around one mission: helping people heal, grow, and reach their full potential.
My journey into this work was not traditional. Growing up, I experienced challenges that taught me the importance of resilience, community, and human connection. Those experiences ultimately inspired me to pursue a career in social work and mental health. Over the years, I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, families, and underserved communities in schools, hospitals, community agencies, and private practice settings.
As a therapist, I noticed that healing often extends beyond traditional counseling. Some of the most meaningful conversations happened around food, family traditions, culture, and shared experiences. That realization led me to combine my passion for mental health with my passion for culinary arts.
Through my doctoral research at the University of Kentucky, I developed the Culinary Healing Model, a culturally informed framework that uses food, storytelling, mindfulness, and community engagement to support emotional wellness and healing. My research focuses on how culturally grounded food practices can positively impact mental health outcomes, particularly within Black communities.
In addition to my work in mental health, I am also the owner of EasyCookinWithSy, where I provide private chef services, catering experiences, culinary education, and content centered around food, culture, and connection. I am also an author and speaker who uses my platforms to educate, inspire, and challenge people to think differently about healing, purpose, and personal growth.
What sets me apart is that I do not see people as problems to be fixed. I see them as individuals with stories, strengths, and untapped potential. Whether I am providing therapy, speaking on a stage, conducting research, facilitating workshops, or preparing a meal, my goal is always the same: to create spaces where people feel seen, valued, and empowered.
One of my proudest accomplishments is creating the Culinary Healing Model because it represents the intersection of every part of who I am—a therapist, researcher, educator, and chef. It demonstrates that healing can happen in innovative ways and that culture, food, and community deserve a place in conversations about mental health.
I want people to know that my brand is bigger than food and bigger than therapy. It is about transformation. Whether I am feeding your mind, your soul, or your stomach, my mission is to help people heal, connect, and become the best version of themselves.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience has been the defining theme of my life.
My journey has never been a straight line. I grew up facing challenges that could have easily become excuses for why I wouldn’t succeed. Instead, they became fuel. From an early age, I learned how to adapt, persevere, and continue moving forward even when circumstances were difficult.
Throughout my career, I have worn many hats—therapist, entrepreneur, chef, author, speaker, and researcher. To some people, those paths may seem unrelated, but they all stem from the same purpose: helping people heal and improve their lives. Building each of those careers required resilience because none of them came with a guaranteed roadmap.
One of the greatest examples of resilience in my journey was pursuing my Doctor of Social Work degree while simultaneously working, running businesses, serving clients, and navigating life’s inevitable challenges. There were moments of exhaustion, uncertainty, financial strain, and self-doubt. Yet I remained committed to the vision I had for my future and the impact I wanted to make.
That persistence eventually led to one of my proudest accomplishments—the creation of the Culinary Healing Model, a framework that combines food, culture, storytelling, and mental health to promote healing and emotional wellness. What began as an idea became doctoral research and is now evolving into a platform that has the potential to impact communities on a larger scale.
Resilience, to me, is not about never struggling. It’s about continuing to move forward despite the struggle. It is choosing purpose over excuses, growth over comfort, and faith over fear. Every challenge I’ve faced has strengthened my belief that our circumstances do not have to define our future. Sometimes the very thing that tries to break us becomes the foundation for the work we’re called to do.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots in my life happened when I realized that I no longer wanted to place myself in a single box professionally.
For years, I built my career in social work and mental health. I worked with children, families, and communities facing significant challenges, and I loved the work. At the same time, I was building a culinary business and discovering how powerful food could be in bringing people together. For a long time, I viewed those passions as separate parts of my life. I was either “Therapist Sy” or “Chef Sy.”
The pivot came when I stopped trying to choose between the two.
Through my experiences working with clients and communities, I noticed that some of the most meaningful conversations happened around food. Food created comfort, connection, storytelling, and a sense of belonging. I began asking bigger questions about the relationship between culture, food, and emotional wellness.
That curiosity eventually led me to pursue doctoral research and develop the Culinary Healing Model, a framework that combines food, culture, storytelling, mindfulness, and mental health principles to promote healing and emotional wellness.
Making that shift was not easy. It required me to step away from traditional expectations and trust a vision that many people did not immediately understand. There was no clear blueprint for combining therapy, research, culinary arts, education, and media into one mission-driven platform.
Today, that pivot has become one of the most rewarding decisions of my career. It allowed me to create work that is uniquely aligned with my purpose and experiences. More importantly, it taught me that sometimes growth is not about choosing between your gifts. It is about finding a way to bring them together in service of something greater than yourself.
