We were lucky to catch up with Jonathan Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathan, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I can honestly say I’m happier as a business owner. Every morning I wake up grateful because I found something that allows me to make a real impact on people’s lives. It’s not just about helping someone lose weight or get stronger—it’s about helping people become better versions of themselves.
I think about what it would be like to have a regular job almost every day, but not because I want one. I think about it because it reminds me how fortunate I am.
One moment that really stands out happened a few months ago. It was early in the morning, around 5:00 a.m. I was opening the gym before sunrise. Most people were still asleep, and one of my longtime clients walked in for her workout. She trained with me five days a week. One day she pulled me aside and told me, “Honestly, the workout is great, but coming here keeps me mentally grounded. This is the best part of my day.”
That hit me hard.
At that moment, I realized she wasn’t showing up just for exercise. She was showing up because our sessions gave her structure, confidence, and a positive outlet during a difficult season in her life. I remember driving home later that day thinking, “If I had chosen a different path, I might never have had the opportunity to make this kind of difference in someone’s life.”
At the same time, I have friends who work jobs they genuinely dislike. I hear them talk about difficult bosses, stressful work environments, and counting down the hours until the weekend. Many of them feel stuck because they have bills to pay and responsibilities they can’t walk away from. I remember having one of those conversations after a long day and thinking about how different my life feels. Yes, being a business owner comes with pressure, uncertainty, and long hours, but I have the freedom to build my own schedule, make my own decisions, and create something that’s mine.
Driving home that evening, I thought about the question: Would I trade this for a regular job? My answer was no. Fuck
No!
The biggest insight I’ve come to is that happiness doesn’t come from having an easy career. Being a business owner is often harder than having a traditional job. My happiness comes from having purpose. Knowing that people trust me with their health, their confidence, and sometimes even their mental well-being gives meaning to the work I do every day. That’s why I wake up excited, and that’s why I’m grateful to be a business owner.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jonathan Brown, and I’m a personal trainer, boxing coach, and business owner based in Orange County.
My journey into fitness started through boxing. Back in 2009, I was training under my coach, Sean Canova, who owned a private training facility in Newport Beach called T-Zone Fitness. At the time, I really didn’t have much direction outside of training. Sean saw something in me and encouraged me to take an online personal training certification course. He told me that if I completed it, he would hire me and teach me everything he knew about becoming a successful trainer and building a clientele.
That decision changed my life.
For the next several years, I learned not only how to train people effectively, but how to build relationships, earn trust, and help people make lasting changes. Much of what I know today came from Sean’s mentorship and the experience I’ve gained working with hundreds of clients.
Today, I offer one-on-one private training, small-group training, boxing instruction, personalized nutrition plans, meal guidance, and online coaching programs. While fitness is the foundation of what I do, my work goes much deeper than workouts.
Many people come to me because they’re frustrated. They’ve tried diets, joined gyms, followed workout plans, other coaches and still aren’t getting results. My job is to help identify what’s holding them back. Sometimes it’s nutrition. Sometimes it’s stress. Sometimes it’s accountability. And sometimes it’s simply having someone who believes in them and helps them stay consistent.
One thing that sets me apart from many trainers is that I show up for my clients emotionally as well as physically. Every client gets personalized coaching based on their goals, lifestyle, and challenges. I don’t believe in cookie-cutter programs.
I believe in practicing what I preach.
Another thing that separates me is the long-term relationships I build. Many of my clients have trained with me for years because they know I genuinely care about their success and well-being. They’re not just another session on my calendar. My longest attending client her name is Pam paul She’s been training with me since 2015 when I first started it and she stayed with me today never left my side. Shout out to Pam. I love you.
I also bring real-world experience. As a former competitive boxer and someone who has spent years coaching people through physical and mental challenges, I understand what it takes to stay disciplined, overcome setbacks, and continue moving forward.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just how much my business has grown,it’s the person I’ve become throughout the process. Building this business has taught me patience, leadership, resilience, and service.
Most importantly, I want people to know that my faith is the foundation of everything I do. My relationship with god and Jesus Christ has guided me through every season of life and business. Following His teachings has helped me serve others, remain grounded, and build relationships that last. My goal is not only to help people improve their physical health but also to positively impact their lives in a meaningful way.
I truly believe that anything is possible when you combine faith, hard work, consistency, and a willingness to serve others.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the biggest tests of resilience in my journey came during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many fitness professionals, my business was hit overnight. The gym where I trained clients was forced to shut down, and almost immediately I lost the majority of my clientele. Fitness coaching was my only source of income at the time, so it was a scary and uncertain period.
I remember sitting there wondering how I was going to pay my bills and continue supporting myself. A handful of clients stayed with me, and I started doing house calls wherever I could. I would drive from location to location trying to make ends meet, but with rising gas prices and fewer clients, it was difficult to see a clear path forward.
Instead of giving up, I focused on what I could control. I kept working, stayed positive, and leaned heavily on my faith. I prayed constantly and trusted that God would open a door if I continued to do the right things.
That door came through one of my clients, who was a nurse and now works in hospice care. Seeing what I was going through, she offered me an opportunity to work as a caregiver. I became certified as a caretaker and was later hired through a healthcare company. That opportunity provided the stability I needed to get through one of the most challenging seasons of my life.
Looking back, COVID taught me that resilience isn’t about avoiding hardship. it’s about continuing to move forward when life doesn’t go according to plan. It taught me to be adaptable, humble, and willing to step outside of my comfort zone when necessary. Most importantly, it strengthened my faith and reminded me that sometimes the opportunities that change your life come from places you never expected.
Today, when I face challenges in business or life, I often think back to that season. If I could survive losing nearly all of my income and find a way through it, I know I can overcome whatever obstacle comes next.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The best source of new clients for me has always been referrals. When you consistently help people achieve results and genuinely care about them, they naturally tell their friends, family members, coworkers, and people in their network. Some of my longest-lasting clients came from a referral years ago and have continued referring people ever since. To me, referrals are the highest compliment because it means someone trusts me enough to recommend me to someone they care about.
Another source of new clients has been social media, especially Instagram. Whenever I want to grow my client base, I’ll reach out directly to people who engage with my content, watch my stories, recently followed me, or are local to my area. I’ll often invite them in for a complimentary workout session so they can experience my coaching style firsthand without any pressure. This approach has been very effective because it allows people to get to know me before making a commitment. Out of every group of people I reach out to, I typically generate several quality conversations that turn into consultations and new clients.
I’m also a big believer in old-fashioned relationship building. Some of the best opportunities have come simply from talking to people face-to-face, networking in the community, introducing myself, and handing out business cards. Fitness is a people business, and I’ve found that genuine conversations and authentic connections often create opportunities that no advertisement can match.
At the end of the day, my business has grown primarily through relationships. Whether it’s a referral from a happy client, a conversation on Instagram, or meeting someone in person, people want to work with someone they know, trust, and believe genuinely cares about their success.
