We were lucky to catch up with Shahin Studios recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shahin, appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
It definitely wasn’t that way from day one.
The studio grew project by project over many years through murals, design commissions, fabrication work, public art, exhibitions, and more recently collectibles and merchandise. One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that creative businesses rarely survive on a single revenue stream.
The major milestone wasn’t landing one big opportunity, it was building a studio capable of adapting. Today our work ranges from public art and interiors to collectibles, prints, and branded merchandise.
If we could do anything differently, we would have focused earlier on building products and systems that could generate income beyond client work. Diversifying has been one of the most important factors in keeping the studio moving forward.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Shahin Studios is a multidisciplinary creative studio based in Pasadena CA, founded by brothers Marwan and Honda Shahin. Our work spans public art, interior design, murals, exhibitions, collectibles, printmaking, and product development.
Marwan leads creative direction, design, and client-facing projects, while Honda oversees production, fabrication, printing, packaging, and fulfillment. Recently, we expanded our team with Shady Mustafa, a talented digital sculptor and 3D artist based in Egypt, which has helped us enter the designer toys and collectibles space.
What makes Shahin Studios unique is our ability to move between industries while maintaining a consistent creative voice. One day we’re producing a large-scale mural or interior installation, and the next we’re developing a collectible sculpture or limited-edition print.
At our core, we’re storytellers. Whether through art, objects, environments, or experiences, our goal is to create work that people connect with emotionally and remember long after they’ve encountered it.
