We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hector Munoz Rosales. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hector below.
Hector, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started off as a clothing brand owner in my early years of trying to own my own business and I struggled with finding a good photographer to shoot my clothing releases. Luckily I have a really good friend who owned a camera at the time and so he began taking photos for me. As time went on though his schedule became a bit busy and so at times when he couldn’t make the shoot he would just leave me his camera and I would set up a tripod and just pose in front of it in different backgrounds I could find throughout the city. Pretty soon I started really loving taking photos in general and so with the community of people I met along my clothing brand journey I started getting people wanting me to shoot them mainly the local music scene. I took my skill with a camera and began my journey taking portraits of local artists and also shooting them during their performances. I would say I could have sped up my learning process by mainly just connecting with other photographers and also learning more online. I am self taught so there was a lot of trial and error in learning what I enjoyed shooting, how I liked to do it, and how I wanted the post process to turn out. The most essential skills I think helped the most was learning how to shoot in different lighting scenarios and also learning to shoot in natural light versus studio lighting which I didn’t get a whole lot of experience other than the lights that would typically be set up at music venues. The only obstacle I would say that stood in my way was myself. I doubted a lot of my skills most of the time even in moments when I truly felt proud of a particular photo I managed to capture. I never gave myself enough grace and was always hard on myself. Even now I catch myself doing that.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Hector Munoz Rosales and I am a proud Honduran Product Photographer currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in Durham, North Carolina. I got into the industry through an accidental love for capturing moments in time and messing around with lighting and shadows and composition. I began as a portrait and event photographer and have since moved more towards product and commercial photography and I help create well polished and sleek photos for brands so that their products stand out from the rest. I am most proud of the people I have met along my journey as a photographer. Making meaning connections is so important in this industry and also being able to provide such a great services to customers.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to someday own my own photography studio in which I could renting it out other creators as comfortable space to create and inspire the next generation of photographers or whatever their creative inclination may be.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a photographer there are “photography rules” that are a guideline for what makes a good photo right, but I love that at the same time there are no rules in photography. If a photo is a good photo its just a good photo. So with that being said with my type of work I love being able to follow certain “rules of photography” that I tend to lean more into and still bend it to make it unique or what is just pleasing to my eye.
