Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jody Deadstock. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jody, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I feel as if my music has always been misunderstood or mischaracterized since I began. When most recording artists begin their artistic journey, they already come from a reputation of being cool, or having a musical background.
I’ve always stayed to myself throughout life, and never expressed myself much verbally. So when I became an artist it confused people. Some people were hesitant to check out my work, since I didn’t have an outward background in music. Little did they know that I grew up around music all my life, and come from a musically talented family.
Also, my work itself is often misunderstood and mischaracterized. Outsiders tend to shun from supporting those who do music. When people think of recording artists, they think of “SoundCloud rappers”, band hippies, and “Get rich quick” schemes. But my music is unique in the sense that, it has a modern sound, but it’s connected to love and my passionate experiences. I use a ton of metaphors and wordplay that may seem to have one meaning, but actually has a much deeper meaning if you dissect it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My love for music began in church, and from my family who has always been musically gifted. I started by singing and playing drums. As a child I had ambition to be an R&B artist, looking up to artists like Chris Brown, Usher, Michael Jackson, and Prince.
Once I became a man, I stared visiting a couple of friends’ home studios so that they could record me. My first project was recorded all by a friend. But I knew I wanted creative control. Not many people enjoyed my first project, and I wasn’t able to curate the sound that I want, so I invested in my own equipment, and that’s when I really took off.
Many people tell me my work ethic is second to none. I work at music in some capacity daily. Whether I’m recording new songs, making edits, creating artwork for the music, or learning new skills to enhance my sound. Music is what I love, so why not dedicate most of my time to it?
From there, I’ve learned how to mix & master, how to record others (as a side hustle), how to create music of all genres, and have taught myself graphic design.
My work is unique. I tend to be very hands on, and I love to curate the sound that I want. Most artists have one main sound that they use, but my sound is very versatile. So much so that I truly don’t have “a sound”.
I just want the world to hear my music, and enjoy it. I know that I have something that everyone on this Earth would enjoy, if you find the song for you.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is when I hear a complete project, and truly enjoy it from a listener’s perspective. Whenever that happens, I generally receive great feedback from the true listeners. That is the most satisfying feeling ever. All I want is for everyone to enjoy what I create.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The coolest aspect about my story is that I created something out of nothing. I’ve never had a team, I’ve never felt like I had the support that I wanted, I ended up working a job that requires me to fly around the country, and still I remain encouraged and never lose focus. I travel 300 days out of the year, and my studio comes with me everywhere I go. I know a lot of artists that would have given up by now.
