We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marlene Davenport a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marlene, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
At 42, I decided to leave everything behind and move to the United States on a student visa. My goal was to learn English and eventually revalidate my pharmacy degree.
Almost everyone who knew me thought I had lost my mind. They believed it was impossible to learn a new language at 42, and even more impossible to become a licensed pharmacist in the United States.
Against all odds, I passed the pharmacy licensing exam on my first attempt. The English proficiency exam was a different story—I passed it after 14 attempts.
That experience taught me one of the most important lessons of my life: resilience is everything.
I eventually revalidated my degree and began working as a pharmacist. Along the way, I saw firsthand how overmedicated our society has become. That realization led me to expand my career and become a health coach and consultant pharmacist.
Today, I help people look beyond symptoms and medications to find the root causes of their health challenges. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that sleep is the foundation of health. That’s why I often start there—helping people sleep through the night, wake up with energy, and give their bodies the opportunity to heal.
Never let anyone else’s doubts determine what is possible for you. Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs begin when you decide to do what others think cannot be done.

Marlene, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a pharmacist, I spent many years helping people manage their medications. Over time, I noticed that many individuals were taking multiple medications yet still struggled with fatigue, poor sleep, low energy, and ongoing health issues. This led me to look beyond symptom management and explore a more comprehensive approach to health.
That journey led me to become a health coach and consultant pharmacist. Today, I help people identify and address the root causes of their health concerns through simple, practical changes in areas such as sleep, nutrition, stress management, and daily habits.
One of the areas I am most passionate about is sleep. I believe sleep is the foundation of good health, and I have seen firsthand how improving sleep can transform a person’s energy, mood, focus, and overall well-being. For many clients, it becomes the first step toward lasting health improvements.
What makes my approach unique is the combination of my pharmacy background and health coaching expertise. I understand the important role medications can play, but I also help people recognize the powerful impact that lifestyle changes can have on their health. My goal is to empower clients with the knowledge and tools they need to take an active role in their well-being.
What makes me most proud is seeing people regain hope. Many clients come to me after being told that their condition is chronic, that they will simply have to live with it, or that medication is their only option. While medications are often necessary and valuable, many people are surprised to discover how much better they can feel when they address the underlying factors affecting their health.
There is nothing more rewarding than watching someone go from feeling frustrated, exhausted, and discouraged to feeling energized, optimistic, and in control of their health again. Often, the transformation extends beyond physical symptoms. As people begin to feel better, I see positive changes in their confidence, relationships, resilience, happiness, and overall quality of life.
My mission is simple: to help people sleep better, have more energy, improve their health, and create a fuller, healthier, and more vibrant life.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My career began while I was still in pharmacy school, when I started a small grocery store business. It was my first experience in entrepreneurship and gave me a foundation in running and managing a business.
One year before graduating as a pharmacist, I bought my first pharmacy. After becoming licensed, I fully stepped into pharmacy ownership and practice. Over time, this grew into a network of up to nine pharmacies with more than 70 employees.
As larger national chains and government-supported pharmacy networks expanded, it became increasingly difficult to compete as an independent operator. I eventually transitioned out of the business through a partnership with a larger company, but the agreement did not unfold as expected, and I stepped away completely two years later.
I lost my business and part of my financial stability, including my inheritance. During that period, I was offered antidepressant treatment, but I felt I needed a complete change in direction. I decided to start over and moved to the United States on a student visa.
These experiences ultimately led me to become a health coach and consultant pharmacist. They also shaped my awareness of how often people are overmedicated without addressing the root causes of their health issues.
Today, I help people improve their health through a holistic approach focused on sleep, lifestyle, and sustainable habits that support long-term well-being.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes, I would choose it again. Pharmacy gave me the clinical foundation to understand medications and disease, but it also showed me the limitations of focusing only on symptoms. That insight is what eventually guided me toward health coaching and a more root-cause approach, which I find very fulfilling.
Every step—from pharmacy practice to health coaching—has added something valuable. Today I feel grateful that I can bridge both worlds and help people improve their health in a more complete and practical way.
