We recently connected with Allyson Jackson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Allyson, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
The defining moment that changed the trajectory of my career wasn’t when I had bariatric surgery in 2014. It happened years later.
After surgery, I lost a significant amount of weight and maintained that success for years. Like many people, I assumed the hard part was behind me. But over time, some of the weight started to come back.
I wasn’t devastated, and I didn’t view it as failure. I viewed it as information. I knew I was capable of creating change because I had done it before. The question became: what was I going to do about it?
Instead of chasing quick fixes, I focused on rebuilding the habits that had helped me succeed in the first place. I recommitted to the basics, made sustainable changes, and ultimately lost more than 50 pounds. More importantly, I learned lessons about long-term success that I never would have learned from the initial weight loss alone.
I fearfully shared my journey online, and the response was incredibly positive. People began reaching out. Many had experienced regain after bariatric surgery and felt stuck. They weren’t looking for perfection. They wanted practical guidance, accountability, and proof that progress was still possible.
That’s when the defining moment happened.
I realized that what I had learned through my own experience could help other people change their lives. The conversations I was having were making an impact, and I began to see a path beyond simply sharing my story. That realization led me to create The Bariatric Comeback, a coaching and support community dedicated to helping people regain confidence, rebuild healthy habits, and embrace the opportunity to start over with a different mindset and renewed purpose.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that setbacks often contain the very knowledge we’re meant to share. If I had never experienced regain, I might never have discovered the purpose and passion I found in helping others navigate it.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Allyson Jackson, and I am the founder of The Bariatric Comeback, a coaching and support community dedicated to helping people find their way forward after bariatric surgery.
Professionally, I’ve spent more than two decades building a career in Human Resources, Payroll, Benefits, and People Operations. Throughout my career, I’ve always been passionate about helping people navigate challenges, create solutions, and achieve meaningful goals. What eventually led me into coaching, however, was my own personal transformation journey.
I underwent bariatric surgery in 2014 and experienced both the successes and challenges that can come with long-term weight management. Years later, after experiencing some weight regain, I made the decision to recommit to the habits that had helped me succeed in the first place. Through sustainable changes and a focus on consistency rather than perfection, I lost more than 50 pounds and discovered something unexpected: many people were struggling with the same challenges and looking for support from someone who truly understood the journey.
That realization led me to create The Bariatric Comeback.
Today, I provide coaching, education, accountability, and community support for bariatric patients who want to improve their health, rebuild confidence, and create sustainable habits that support long-term success. My focus is not on quick fixes, rigid rules, or unrealistic expectations. Instead, I help people simplify the process, reconnect with the tools they already have, and build momentum one step at a time.
What sets my approach apart is that I am not teaching from theory alone—I am teaching from lived experience. I understand the excitement of surgery, the challenges that can arise years later, and the reality that success after bariatric surgery is not a one-time event. It is an ongoing journey.
The thing I am most proud of is creating a space where people feel supported rather than judged. Too many people believe that if they regain weight or struggle after surgery, they have somehow failed. I believe the opposite. Every day is an opportunity to learn, adjust, and move forward.
If there is one thing I want people to know about me and my brand, it’s this: you do not have to be perfect to be successful. Progress is built through consistency, self-awareness, and a willingness to keep showing up for yourself. My mission is to help people realize that their best chapter may still be ahead of them.

Have you ever had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots in my life happened when I stopped viewing my bariatric journey as something that was just for me.
For years, my focus was entirely personal. I was working on my own health, my own goals, and becoming the best version of myself. As I shared parts of my journey online, people began reaching out with questions, struggles, and stories of their own.
What surprised me was how many people felt alone. They weren’t necessarily looking for someone to give them all the answers, they were looking for someone who understood.
That realization changed everything.
What started as sharing my experiences evolved into coaching, mentoring, and ultimately creating The Bariatric Comeback. I shifted from focusing solely on my own transformation to helping others navigate theirs.
The experience taught me that sometimes the most meaningful opportunities come from places we never expected. I never set out to become a coach, but by being willing to share my story, I discovered a new purpose and a new way to make an impact.
Looking back, that pivot wasn’t just a business decision. It was a mindset shift that transformed a personal journey into a mission to help others believe that progress is always possible.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most important lessons I had to unlearn was the belief that my circumstances determined my future.
The backstory goes all the way back to my early career and my struggles with weight. I started my professional journey as a payroll secretary and, at the time, never imagined I would one day become a Director of Payroll, Benefits, and People Operations. Fortunately, someone saw potential in me and was willing to teach me, challenge me, and give me opportunities to grow.
Around the same time, I carried a similar belief about my health. I had struggled with my weight for much of my life and often felt like lasting change was something other people achieved—not me.
What I eventually learned is that being stuck and feeling stuck are not the same thing.
As I advanced in my career, I discovered I was capable of far more than I had originally believed. Bariatric surgery and the years that followed taught me the same lesson in my personal life. Each time I thought I had reached my limit, I found another level of growth waiting for me.
Today, I no longer assume that where I am determines where I can go. Whether it’s my career, my health, or even pursuing a real estate license in my 50s, I’ve learned that growth often begins the moment we stop accepting the stories that tell us what’s possible.
The lesson I had to unlearn was that I was limited by my circumstances. The lesson I learned instead is that there is almost always another path forward if you’re willing to keep learning, keep growing, and keep believing that more is possible.
