We recently connected with Ladies Fancywork Society and have shared our conversation below.
Ladies, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
We have been making crochet art since 2007, starting by putting up yarn bombs/knit tigs on bus stops and benches, and eventually moving onto larger sculptures. This move necesitated learning to create some of our own backing structures and sculptural bases, and eventually we started creating most of our pieces from scratch in this way- from structure/form to the crochet and fiber art that lay on top. So learning to crochet was one thing, but the engineering underneath it was a whole other beast and we learn something new with every piece- generally that less is more.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
The Ladies Fancywork Society has been terrorizing your neighborhood with their garish yarn crimes since 2007. What began as a group of crochet-loving friends just chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool and shooting some b-ball outside of the school has transformed into a diabolic art hydra capable of putting together large-scale projects, international art shows, and installations.
While the world Society implies a large group, we’re actually just four friends who love making art and building worlds together.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Getting to build a new world, portal, or glimpse into an alternate reality and seeing others react to it! We love creating the unexpected, making people stop in their tracks and smile or even just consider possibilities they hadn’t before.
Also we really love hearing people tell other people that we’re a group of very very old ladies doing all of this. Are we? We’ll never tell!!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Whimsy, fun, world building, birthing creatures from the yarniverse, having a darn good time with each other! It doesnt’ always have to be so serious, sometimes fun is fun.
