We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fabio Melo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Fabio, appreciate you joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I grew up around construction in Brazil, where my grandfather was a contractor. Being on job sites from a young age gave me a passion for building and showed me the impact a well-built home can have on a family.
After moving to Canada, I spent years working in construction, learning the trade, managing projects, and understanding what homeowners were looking for. Over time, I realized I wanted to create a company that focused not only on quality workmanship but also on trust, communication, and customer experience.
When I decided to start KAZA Contracting, the first steps were setting up the business, getting insured, building relationships with trades and suppliers, and finding my first clients. In the beginning, I did everything myself—from sales and estimating to project management and site work.
The early years were all about building a reputation. Every project led to referrals, and every referral helped us grow. As demand increased, I focused on building a strong team and improving our systems so we could consistently deliver high-quality results.
What started as an idea and a lot of hard work has grown into a company that helps homeowners bring their vision to life, while maintaining the values that inspired me to start in the first place.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Fabio Melo, and I’m the founder of KAZA Contracting. I got into construction at a young age through my grandfather in Brazil, and I’ve been passionate about building ever since.
After moving to Canada, I spent years working in the construction industry before starting KAZA Contracting. I wanted to create a company that focused on quality work, honest communication, and a better experience for homeowners.
Today, we specialize in home renovations, basement finishing, additions, and custom residential projects. Our goal is simple: deliver great results while making the process as smooth and stress-free as possible.
What sets us apart is the way we treat our clients. We take pride in being hands-on, reliable, and building long-term relationships. Most of our work comes from referrals, which is something I’m very proud of.
At the end of the day, we’re not just renovating homes—we’re helping families create spaces they can enjoy for years to come.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the biggest lessons in resilience came when I started my business. Like many entrepreneurs, there were times when cash flow was tight, projects were challenging, and I had to wear every hat in the company—from sales and estimating to project management and site work.
There were moments when things didn’t go as planned, but I learned to stay focused, adapt quickly, and keep moving forward. Instead of looking for shortcuts, I concentrated on delivering quality work and taking care of my clients. Over time, those efforts turned into referrals, repeat business, and steady growth.
That experience taught me that resilience isn’t about avoiding challenges—it’s about showing up every day, solving problems, and continuing to push forward even when things get difficult.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
A lot of my thinking around business, leadership, and decision-making has been shaped by reading and personal study over the years, along with hands-on experience in construction.
One of the biggest influences for me has been the Bible. It’s shaped how I approach integrity, discipline, patience, and how I treat people—both clients and the teams I work with. Those principles carry directly into how I run my business on a daily basis.
Beyond that, most of my entrepreneurial mindset has been developed through real-world experience in the field. Construction doesn’t give you much room for theory—you learn through dealing with clients, solving problems on site, managing pressure, and figuring things out in real time.
Over time, that combination of strong personal values and practical experience has shaped how I lead KAZA Contracting: stay honest, stay consistent, and focus on delivering quality work while building long-term relationships.
